MILPITAS -- An altercation at a sporting goods store at the Great Mall
turned into the city's first homicide of the year, with one man dead and
another in custody Friday morning.
Milpitas police were called to the Sports Authority store at 10:49 a.m. on
reports of a fight involving a weapon, and according to Sgt. Raj Maharaj,
they were there within seconds and quickly apprehended a suspect without
incident.
They then found the victim, who was dead at the scene. Maharaj said they are
not releasing any additional information about the involved parties or
weapon used at this time. He did not know the relationship between the two
men, and said there is no reason to believe there is any additional threat
to the public.
"There is nobody outstanding in this, and no other suspects," Maharaj said.
It was the first slaying of the year for Milpitas, but not the first ever at
the Great Mall. Maharaj said there were two homicides at the mall in the
past five years.
The last homicide in Milpitas occurred in September of last year, when
Mohammad Reza Sadeghzadeh was shot to death while tending the till at a 7-
Eleven at 1496 N. Milpitas Blvd. It was the only homicide of 2012, and
remains under investigation.
Sports Authority was closed Friday, as detectives remained at the scene. The
rest of the mall was open.
