UC Admission and Enrollment Data Analysis (1996 - 2010)

From analyzing the data, I have these important conclusions:
- Chicano/Latino group is competing with White, not Asian American
- Asian American has high enrollment is not because admission policy
All data come from this file:
http://data.universityofcalifornia.edu/student/admissions/data-
I take the whole UC data instead of each campus.
I take these years: 1996, 1997, 2010. This is because Prop 209 is
implemented in 2007, so it can compare with 1996 data, and 2010 is the most
recent data in this file.
Please note the ‘Admit Rate’ in the file is admission rate among number of
applicants in their respective ethnic group, this percentage remains fairly
constant so I don’t use it. Instead I compute the two numbers: admission
percentage among all students, and enrollment percentage among all students.
Admission Percentage Among All Students
1996 1997 2010
African American 1687/43300 = 3.9% 1633/44738 = 3.65% 3191/79051 =
4.03%
Asian American 13736/43300 = 31.72% 14558/44738 = 32.54% 25611/
79051 = 32.4%
Chicano/Latino 5885/43300 = 13.59% 5877/44738 = 13.14%
16346/79051 = 20.68%
White 17999/43300= 41.57% 19067/44738 = 42.62% 25422/79051 = 32.16%
This shows:
- Prop209 only caused very small decline in Chicano/Latino group (<0.5%),
and the admission rate has actually gone way up at year 2010.
- Asian American admission rate remains the same (e.g. no benefit from
Prop 209)
- Latino group admission rate goes up while White group goes down.
Enrollment Percentage Among All Students

African American 903/24127 = 3.74% 948/24986 = 3.79% 1293/35337 = 3
.65%
Asian American 8709/24127 = 36.1% 9097/24986 = 36.41% 14079/35337 =
39.84%
Chicano/Latino 3245/24127 = 13.45% 3165/24986 = 12.67% 7302/35337 =
20.66%
White 9262/24127 = 38.39% 10048/24986 = 40.21% 9470/35337 = 26.8%
This shows:
- Latino students percentage is going up (13.45% to 20.66%)
- Asian American students percentage is big (almost 40%). Compared with
low White data, this might be the whole purpose of this SCA-5 bill.
However, if you related these two tables together, you can see that the high
Asian American enrollment rate is not because there’s admission policy
that favors Asian American (since admission rate remains the same), it’s
because Asian Americans when admitted, most of them go to study.
For Latino group, their admission and enrollment rate is steadily going up.
For White group, both of the rates goes down, they are not as competitive as
Latino groups, and they have a fair amount of students that don’t enroll
once admitted.
As conclusion:
- Don’t take Asian American as scapegoat
- Find out why Latinos are doing better and better, and the white group
can learn from it. | c******a
