Most musicians know the old joke. A tourist asks a New Yorker: “How do you
get to Carnegie Hall?” Answer: “Practice! Practice!”
For the Senior Honour Orchestra, almost four dozen young string players from
Vancouver’s Lord Byng Secondary School, practice, talent, and dedication
got them, not to Carnegie Hall, but to Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan’s
grand temple of music, Lincoln Centre. There they competed against the best
of the best of their peers in the National School Orchestra Finals, winning
the coveted first place championship as well as awards for best solo
violinist and best string orchestra.
In British Columbia, school orchestras are very few and far between; at Byng
ensembles survive, indeed thrive, winning hosts of awards and prizes at
regional and international festivals.
The recent success is a story in itself. Preparation entailed three
rehearsals a week (two of them at 7:20 a.m.) and a host of logistical
details, fundraising activities (like sushi sales), creation of performing
outfits, and so on. Director Odette Creanga-Kurth and her musicians (and
their supporters) have learned the drill through competition every year.
Still it is no small undertaking to transport 46 kids and a small entourage
of chaperones and interested parents to the Big Apple. And on the morning of
March 8 things didn’t go exactly as planned getting from the hotel to the
hall.
“The subway broke down three stops before Lincoln Centre,” says Creanga-
Kurth. With just minutes to their performance (and no chance of rescheduling
), they made a run for it, instruments, music, and all. “They had just a
couple of minutes to change into their uniforms and tune instruments and get
on stage, with their hair dishevelled from running up Broadway.”
Once their set began, all went well in their performance of Bartok’s
Romanian Folk Dances and Tchaikovsky’s lush but difficult Serenade for
Strings. The resulting triple win speaks to the standard of the group’s
musicianship and long hours of preparation. The youngsters may even have
picked up an new performance strategy.
“Now the kids say that before every concert from now on, they’re going to
run around the block, because that was the best they ever played!”
