(04-02) 17:38 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A Fisherman's Wharf shopkeeper was
convicted Wednesday of shooting two neighboring merchants to death three
years ago.
Hong Ri Wu, 59, was found guilty after a two-week trial in San Francisco
Superior Court of two counts of first-degree murder for the slayings of
Qiong Han Chu and Feng Ping Ou, both 30.
Prosecutors said Wu opened fire on Chu and Ou's tiny Jefferson Street shop
on Jan. 30, 2011 because his business suffered when the two refused to stop
peddling the same knockoff purses that he was trying to sell at his store.
He said he believed that when all the shopkeepers signed their leases, they
agreed to not sell competing items.
Wu openly admitted that night to shooting Chu, an only son who took care of
his elderly parents, and Ou, a new mother with a then 2-month-old daughter.
His attorney, Deputy Public Defender Sandy Feinland, had asked the jury to
find him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter, arguing that he killed
the two victims after they bullied him to a breaking point. He had been
declared mentally incompetent to stand trial following his arraignment, and
tried to commit suicide by refusing to eat.
With the two first-degree murder convictions, Wu faces a potential sentence
of life without parole in state prison.
"Two people were gunned down by Hong Ri Wu, and he deserves to spend the
rest of his life in prison atoning for his crimes," said District Attorney
George Gascón. "There is nothing that will bring closure to the families of
the two victims, and our hearts go out to them as they attempt to put this
difficult chapter of their lives behind them."
Wu is scheduled to return to court May 16 for sentencing. | k**********4
