Remember that Carbon forms tetrahedral structure, i.e. diamond
while also forms graphite. The reason, chemically speaking, is
carbon atoms in diamond is sp3 hybridized while in graphite is
sp2 hybridized, therefore the interaction is stronger in the
diamond case.
