of Washington computer science department today, giving a broad overview of
the company and the direction of the tech industry.
Of course, a big reason any company takes part in this type of talk is to
get potential recruits excited about its vision. That's more important than
ever in Microsoft's case, as it settles into middle age.
Which is why one student's question stood out as particularly noteworthy, as
a barometer of the general mood.
"So it seems like Microsoft might have a harder time recruiting new
employees than other companies -- for example I've heard that Microsoft
spends 10 times recruiting an employee as Apple does," he said. "And I know
when companies come here and talk to us, other companies have made a much
more compelling argument as to, you know, the challenges of the things that
they're working on, as opposed to Microsoft. I was just wondering if you
thought that might be a problem, and if you had any potential solutions."
How's that for a subtle zinger?
You can hear the question and watch Ballmer's response in the video above.
He disagreed with the student's statement about Microsoft's spending on
recruiting, and discussed the company's record in attracting top employees.
But he took his time getting to the subtext of the question -- which was, OK
, but why should we care about Microsoft enough to want to work there?
On that topic, Ballmer said: "On balance, the quality of the work -- that is
the interest level, the excitement level, the chance to do interesting
stuff -- we're right up there with anybody on the planet."
Later, he amped it up a bit. "You get to work on Kinect! And phones! And new
versions of Windows!" he said, clapping his hands with each for emphasis. "
Geez some of you even like technical stuff. You can work on that compiler,
and back end. We have a diversity of work, which I think's part of the
appeal."
See the video below for additional highlights from Ballmer's talk with the
UW's Ed Lazowska, including an overview of the company's current business,
its reputation as a follower in the industry, and Ballmer's thoughts on
Google, startups and innovation.

because it's doing interesting stuff? people needs good salary and good
