Dear xx,
There are a few easy diagnostic tests to tell the difference between young
horse clams and eastern softshells. The easiest is that horse clams, even
small horse clams, have a leathery “flap” or plate at the top of the
siphon. It often has barnacles or seaweed growing on it although this is
more common in larger horse clams. The eastern soft shell will never have
those leathery flaps on the tips of their siphons. Also, in my experience,
the outer shell surface of a horse clam is smoother and more uniform than an
eastern. The eastern tends to look a little more “beaten up” and is
chalkier than the horse clam. In an eastern, the tip of the shell where the
siphon comes out of the clam is significantly pointier than the tip of the
horse clam shell, and it does not have such a large “gape” hole where the
siphon comes out of the shell.
The most definitive diagnostic once you clean the eastern softshell is the
presence of a large spoon-shaped structure called a chondrophore in the
inside of the left valve near the hinge. Here is a picture of that spoon-
like structure:
One more thing: in the image you sent, the row of 3 clams at the top are all
horse clams. The row of two clams at the bottom are eastern softshells.
