Summary:This trip is oh so amazing! You will love it! We are cruising in a
luxury motorcoach from Seattle to Yellowstone National Park and back again
with each and every day filled with so many fun things to do. Your bucket
list will be getting checks left and right.
We’ll be seeing everything from state parks to national parks, from boat
rides to bordellos, from wildlife to waterfalls, from flowers to fire towers
, from Cathedrals to Capitols. We will be taking you to hell and back (Hells
Canyon, that is) to take a once-in-a-lifetime boat ride down the Snake
River. HOT! Old Faithful is faithfully waiting to see you and is going to
burst with pleasure when you get there! COOL! Speaking of cool, you’ll be
sure to say, “Dam, that’s cool!” Or maybe you’ll say, “That dam is sure
cool!” Or maybe, “That grand dam is cool-eeeee!” Actually the Grand
Coulee Dam will impress you even if you don’t say anything at all!
We’re so glad you are coming with us so we can spoil you and see some of
our amazing United States together! Who do you see sitting in the seat next
to you?

Itinerary:
Day 1/Our Adventure Begins…Wild Horses Won’t Stop Us!
Are you ready for a fantastic trip? We sure hope so. We will pick you up on
our MTR Western luxury motorcoach at one of our three pick up locations:
Everett Train Station, Northgate Park & Ride, or the Bellevue Red Lion. We
will depart the Seattle area with visions of grizzly bears, buffalo, geysers
, and steaming craters. Our final destination, of course, is beautiful
Yellowstone National Park, home of Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo.
On this 11 day trip, we will see and learn about much more than just this
gorgeous National Park. For instance, have you seen the giant windmills that
are sprouting all over the Washington state’s high desert? We’re going to
be educated on why they are here and what value they are adding. We will
lunch outside of Ellensburg while we tour the Wild Horse Wind and Solar
Facility. I can already imagine the conversations we will have as folks
debate the pros and cons of these controversial additions to our Northwest
landscape.
As an added bonus that only Discover the Northwest Tours does so well, we
have special stop off locations for snacks and sites between Ellensburg and
the Palouse, home of the Washington State Cougars. We will enjoy dinner in
Lewiston as we prepare for a day on the river tomorrow looking for sheep,
elk and historical landmarks featuring the Nez Pearce Indians. We will be
spending 2 nights in Lewiston.
NOTE: To make your trip even more special, we are partnering with the
National Park staff on Day 8 to offer unique excursions to explore the Park
that you can choose based on what captures your attention. There are
multiple options for you to choose from and today your Travel Specialist
will help you choose the trip best for you. You will make your choice by the
time we reach Missoula so that we can make your reservation.
Day 2
Going to Hell and Back: Hells Canyon, Snake River, and Seven Devils
Mountains
Good morning friends! After breakfast, we are off for a magical day in
majestic Hells Canyon, America’s deepest river gorge at 7,993 feet. Wow!
The canyon was carved by the waters of the Snake River, which flows more
than 1 mile below the canyon's west rim on the Oregon side and 7,400 feet
below the peaks of Idaho's Seven Devils Mountains range to the east. Most of
the area is inaccessible by road so we will see it by boat! Yes, you read
that correctly! You have 2 fabulous options on the river: Relaxed & Historic
or Wet & Wild.
A. Relaxed & Historic: Some may choose the Half-day Jet Boat Tour of Hells
Canyon featuring the Nez Perce Crossing Tour. Doug Bar is the historic
location where Chief Joseph led his people from Oregon, across the Snake
River, to Idaho. The Chief was leading his people to the Lapwai Indian
Reservation per orders from the U.S. Army. The events before and after this
crossing led to numerous battles and one of the greatest retreats in
military history.
B. Wet & Wild: Others may choose to take the Boogie Boat Extreme Hells
Canyon Dam Trip, a "one of a kind" excursion. This trip on the Boogie Boat
is by far the most exciting way to experience Hells Canyon. Follow the
rivers to the confluence of the Clearwater River and Snake River to the
Lewis Clark Valley and get wet in the open top Boogie Boat! This trip is
fueled by adrenaline! The first 79 miles out of Lewiston will be in one of
their covered tour boats. Then after lunch, when the weather is at its
hottest, we board the Boogie Boat for an exhilarating and exciting ride up
through class 1 to 5 rapids for the next 29 miles to the Hells Canyon Dam.
If you think the ride up is exciting, just wait till the ride back! (This is
not suitable for children under 5. See picture above.)
Whether you choose Relaxed & Historic or Wet & Wild, your bucket list will
have one less item on it. We will spend the night in Lewiston again so that
we can have a restful evening before we continue our adventure bright and
early in the morning.
Day 3 Missoula’s Cracker Barrel
Good morning! Hopefully you had a great breakfast and your coffee is hitting
the spot. Our coach will take us east to the land of picnic baskets and
curious bears. We will drive along the gorge with the rushing river below.
We’ll drive thru wildlife filled wilderness that meanders through small
towns and logging communities.
I admit that we could make it a long day and drive straight through to
Yellowstone, but stopping at the Cracker Barrel in Missoula, Montana will
surely top off this scenic drive through Idaho and Montana. Whether you’ve
been to a Cracker Barrel or not, you will be in for a real treat. You’ll
probably want to take some time to browse through their old-fashioned
general store where you can find all sorts of nostalgic memorabilia for
yourself or loved ones. We have a couple activities planned for you in
Missoula. We will sleep here and prepare for Yellowstone in the morning.
Day 4 Yogi, here we come! Yellowstone awaits!
Good morning, y’all! It has been a great trip so far and now we get to see
one of the star attractions: Yellowstone National Park, America's first
national park established in 1872. Yellowstone extends through Wyoming,
Montana, and Idaho. The park's name is derived from the Yellowstone River
which runs through the park. As we enter from the north end of the park, we
will first see Mammoth Hot Springs. This is Park Headquarters and it
features some of the oldest buildings in the Park. At the Albright Visitor
Center and Museum we will browse the history exhibit and walk through the
wildlife museum. With elk often grazing on the green lawns of Mammoth
Village, we will hopefully get an up close view of one of the Northwest’s
most treasured animals.
Our next stop is Norris Geyser Basin which is one of Yellowstone National
Park’s most popular geyser basins. Norris is home to Echinus (one of the
Park’s most popular geysers) and Steamboat (the world’s tallest geyser).
We will continue south to The Lower Geyser Basin which is the largest geyser
basin in Yellowstone. It covers approximately 11 square miles. By
comparison, The Upper Geyser Basin only covers about one square mile.
Because of its large size, the thermal features in the Lower Geyser Basin
tend to be clumped in widely spaced groups. The easiest grouping to get to
and probably the most interesting to explore is the Fountain Paint Pot Area.
Next on our list is the only predicted geyser in the Lower Geyser Basin and
the only predicted geyser in Yellowstone that you can drive to is the Great
Fountain Geyser. The time has come to end our day of travel at the geyser of
all geysers. The name says it all and everyone who visits for the first
time should watch this most famous of geysers erupt. Old Faithful is the
most popular attraction in Yellowstone National Park. Although neither the
highest or most regular geyser in the Park, it is spectacular!!
We will rest here for the night and be grateful that we are able to witness
Mother Nature’s brilliance. Bison and elk can often times be spotted
grazing in the area. Be sure to take the 1.4 mile walk to Morning Glory Pool
, one of the most colorful thermal features in all of Yellowstone. You may
also want to walk around the boardwalks and visit some of the many other
geysers in the Upper Geyser Basin such as Castle, Grotto, Riverside and
Daisy for an hour or two. Well, that is quite a day!
Day 5: Jackson Hole, The Grand Tetons, and Big Red
Good morning Friends! Do you remember where you were when June Carter and
Johnny Cash sang this for the first time?
We got married in a fever
Hotter than a pepper sprout
We've been talking' 'bout Jackson
Ever since the fire went ou-out
I'm goin' to Jackson, I'm gonna mess around
Yeah, I'm goin' to Jackson, look out Ja-ackson town
Well guess where we are going? Yes, we are going to Jackson…………………
Jackson Hole, that is! Going to Jackson means we get to get up close and
personal with the Grand Teton Mountains which rise to an elevation of 13,770
feet above sea level. The best way for us to see the Grand Tetons is
onboard Big Red, the Cable to the Sky, which will take us 4,139 vertical
feet in 15 minutes to the top of Rendezvous Mountain for an experience we
will never forget. What a great way to see the world from the top down—
truly a 360 degree view! Jackson Hole, the Snake River Valley, Grand Teton
National Park, and the staggering summit of the Grand are all visible from
the tram’s summit. We will sleep in Jackson tonight before heading back to
more attractions in Yellowstone tomorrow.
Day 6: Yellowstone Lake, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Waterfalls, and
Lamar Valley
Howdy Partner! Coffee and bacon always taste best in the mountains so
hopefully you were able to wrestle up some good grub. Today is filled with
majesty and beauty as we explore the West Thumb Geyser Basin, Yellowstone
Lake, Hayden Valley, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. West Thumb
Geyser Basin features some interesting thermal features, including several
which are in Yellowstone Lake itself. It also offers a good view of the Lake
. Yellowstone Lake is breathtaking in grandeur as it is the largest high-
altitude lake in the lower 48 states. As we follow the long shoreline both
east and north, we will see snow-capped mountains rising across the lake. On
windy days, ocean-like waves break onto the shore.
Hayden Valley is centrally located in Yellowstone National Park, and is the
place to go to see wildlife in Yellowstone. As we drive along this beautiful
, broad valley we are likely to see herds of bison, scattered elk (and the
occasional herd), and maybe even grizzly bear. Hey , where are you? It is
also likely that we’ll see waterfowl (including ducks, Canadian geese and
pelicans) swimming in or lounging near the Yellowstone River. Although
Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon may not be as big as the Grand Canyon in Arizona
, it is nonetheless breathtaking. The Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon, at
308 feet high, is one of the most popular and most photographed features in
all of Yellowstone. The second most popular waterfall in Yellowstone, Tower
Fall, is located behind the General Store. A short walk will take us to an
overlook. For those able and willing, a short-but-steep hike down takes us
to the base of the waterfall. No skinny dipping!
Lamar Valley, a must-visit area for serious wildlife watchers, is a wide,
expansive valley home to bison, elk, coyotes, grizzly bears, and wolves.
While bison and elk are readily visible, coyotes can often times be spotted.
For those who want the opportunity to see bears and wolves, be willing to
wait up until dusk or rise early in the morning. In fact, Lamar Valley is
the #1 destination for viewing wolves. With that in mind, we will stay the
night tonight close to the Lamar Valley so we can take advantage of this
opportunity to observe wildlife in a primitive and natural setting.
Day 7: Yellowstone and Helena, MT
How y’all doing? We will spend the morning continuing to explore the
northern part of Yellowstone Park and then we’ll start our trek north
towards Glacier National Park. On the way, we will see what Helena, Montana
has to offer. We will board Helena’s Last Chance Tour Train and marvel at
the Cathedral of St. Helena with its dramatic 230 foot spires (about 20
stories tall). We’ll cruise by Reeder’s Alley, a charming restored miners
’ village from the gold rush days. We’ll see the authentic Pioneer Cabin
built in 1864 (one of the last remaining structures that represents Helena’
s early history). We will catch a glimpse of The Old Fire Tower which was
built in 1876 and is one of the few remaining fire towers you’ll see in the
United States.
We will take in the unique downtown architecture along Last Chance Gulch
including buildings embellished with giant lizards, thumbprints and
gargoyles. We will see the Greek Renaissance architecture of Montana’s
impressive State Capitol. Constructed of native Columbus sandstone and
crowned with a massive copper dome, the cornerstone was laid in 1899, with
construction of this impressive structure being completed and dedicated in
1902. If you like mansions you will love the opulent mansion district,
featuring the dream homes of Helena’s mining millionaires. We will cruise
right by the Governors’ homes (old and new) like we are one of the
neighbors. Then we will see the Victorian beauty that served as the home of
Montana’s governors from 1913 to 1959, as well as the newer home that’s
the current chief executive’s abode. This is the moment that we start to
feel a little insecure about our own homes. Well, we can’t all be Governors
right? A good meal and a relaxing night of sleep is a perfect end to any
vacationer’s day.
Day 8: Glacier National Park aboard the Red Buses
Good morning! We will be heading directly to Glacier National Park for a day
of continued scenic beauty and wonder. Because we want this trip to be
special to you (and we’re confident that it has been so far), you will be
provided with an opportunity to explore the Park based on your specific
interests. Remember on Day 1 you had a list of options to choose from? We
are partnering with the National Park staff to offer you unique excursions
that you chose based on what captured your attention.
We will hand you off to the National Parks Rangers so you can take a ride on
one of the historic Red Buses while you view the sites of Glacier National
Park in style. These vintage motor coaches, built by the White Motor Company
, travel over the Going-to-the-Sun Road and link all of the hotels and inns
within the Park. These bright red coaches have roll-back canvas tops that
allow for spectacular views! Your meal will match the scenery and we will
stay right in the Park tonight. I can’t imagine a better place to rest,
relax, and read a good book.
Day 9/August 27: Wallace, Big Sky Country, and Silver Valley Mine
Good morning! We will sleep in and soak in the morning. The morning is yours
to relax, take in a hiking trail, or spend your morning doing whatever you
like to do. After lunch we will board our bus and head back west towards our
destination: Wallace, Idaho. We will pass buffalo and wild game as we
travel thru Big Sky Country.
Are you ready to see the Silver Valley? Historic Wallace has been long
famous as the "Silver Capital of the World" with 1.2 billion ounces of
silver produced in Shoshone County since 1884. We will take a Silver Valley
Mine tour before having lunch in this quaint little town. You will have time
for a little walk through town to explore some of the historical buildings
and businesses. Some of you might wander into the Oasis Bordello Museum. No,
they will not be taking customers, but they will be showing you what life
was like for the working ladies and the impact they had on this small town.
We continue on to Silver Mt. Resort (in Kellogg, Idaho) where we will touch
the sky on North America’s longest gondola ride. Secure inside an enclosed
cable car, we will travel 3.1 miles up the mountain where our panoramic
views will give us a unique look at the Silver Mountain area. Fresh air,
beautiful scenery, and wildlife will provide the canvas for a fantastic
evening. The evening is yours to relax and enjoy the mountain air.
Day 10: Dam, that’s Cool-ee! The Grand Coulee Dam & Manito Park
Good morning! Who wants to see beautiful roses, lilac trees and an amazing
English Garden? Well, you're in luck because we are going to Manito Park,
which has five gardens, a conservatory, and duck pond on its 90-acre campus.
What was built from 1933 to 1975, is 550 feet tall, has a 500 foot wide
polished granite base, has a 30-foot wide crest, and supports a paved two-
lane road? If you guessed the Grand Coulee Dam then you have earned a
scratch-and-sniff sticker! The Grand Coulee Dam is truly magnificent to
behold! When you include the third powerhouse, Grand Coulee Dam is almost 1
mile long. Now imagine the Columbia River telling you the
story of how and why the Grand Coulee Dam came to be built. This narrated
story combines colorful lasers that move across the entire span of the dam,
creating magnificent moving images that virtually dance across the spillway!
Beautiful music and an uplifting patriotic finish provide worthy
entertainment for all ages. This is where we will bring our day to a close,
on the banks of the Columbia River. We can see and hear the program from the
deck of our hotel room! Pretty neat huh?
Day 11: Dry Falls State Park, Leavenworth and Home
Good morning! Alas, this is our last day together. Aren’t you glad you came
? It’s been a wonderful 11 days. The new friendships made will prepare us
for our next adventures together. After breakfast we will take a short trip
to the majestic Dry Falls State Park. Dry Falls is one of the great
geological wonders of North America. Carved by Ice Age floods that
disappeared long ago, the former waterfall is now a stark cliff that is 400
feet high and 3.5 miles wide. In its heyday, the waterfall was four times
the size of Niagara Falls! Today it overlooks a desert oasis filled with
lakes and abundant wildlife.
We will continue our journey to Lake Chelan and Leavenworth for a little
Bavarian culture. Our trip is almost complete. Our final drive down Highway
2 and over Stevens Pass will give us a tremendous view of the Wenatchee
River which guides us to our final destination---home. Your memory DVD will
be mailed to you and we wish you the very best as you continue your travels
and adventures. Thank you for trusting Discover the Northwest Tours with
your precious vacation time. We look forward to traveling with you and your
friends again.
Yellowstone…and oh so MUCH more!
