EVERETT, Wash. - A state trooper who caught a man driving in the Interstate
5 car-pool lane with a dummy in the passenger seat Thursday says it was the
mannequin's messy blond wig that gave away the deception.
The Washington State Patrol says the trooper was headed south on I-5 in an
unmarked car at about 8 a.m. when he noticed a flash of bright blonde from
the Mazda Miata in the HOV lane next to him.
"He's like, 'That's got to be a wig," says Trooper Mark Francis as he
described the incident later. "And he gets a little closer ... and he looks
at it, and he's like, 'Thats a male mannequin with a blond wig on.'"
The trooper pulled over the driver, who was a little embarrassed.
"He proceeded to tell the trooper that the name of the mannequin is 'Mr.
Safety,'" says Francis.
The trooper admitted that the gag was pretty funny, but that he had to write
him a $124 ticket for violation of HOV lane rules, which require at least
two actual human beings to be in the vehicle.
Francis said the driver might have gotten away with the deception if the
dummy's hair had not been so bright or if it were neatly combed.
"You would think he would tone it down a bit, because (the trooper) said
that's what first caught his eye, is that bright blond hair, and he could
tell straight up that it was a wig," Francis said. "If you'd part the hair
over the face it might look a little more real - maybe put it in a ponytail,
or a bun, or something ... " | h********y
