Abstract:
Japan and China are two most important countries in Asia. Japan had taken
the lead in developing into a modern nation since the late nineteenth
century. China has recently overtaken Japan to become the second largest
economy in the world. Geographical neighbours, the two countries have
maintained bilateral relations as sovereign states for almost two millennia.
Japan and China are experiencing increasingly strained relations in recent
years triggered largely by the dispute over Senkaku Islands, a group of tiny
islets. The speaker will look at recent incidents over the islands,
geographical location of the islands, brief modern history, Japan's position
, China's position, legal analysis of the title to the islands, political
implication, etc. He will also suggest an approach that could defuse the
existing tensions.
About the Speaker:
Professor Takaaki Kojima obtained his BA from Tokyo University and LLB in
International Law from Cambridge University. Professor Kojima was Fellow at
the Wetherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University. He is
currently Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asia
Studies. Prior to this, he was Counsellor, Embassy in China; Minister,
Embassy in the UK; Consul General in San Paulo, Brazil; Minister, Embassy in
the US; Director General for Intelligence and Analysis, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs of Japan; Ambassador to Singapore; Ambassador to Australia;
and Ambassador in charge of Counter Terrorism Cooperation. |
