The two are opposite to each other and they switch back and forth with some
neutral phase in between. Both last 3 to 5 years.
During El Nino winters, expect big snowfalls from Southern California to
Texas but drier conditions in the northern Rockies and Canada. (El Nino is
to blame for the snow shortage at Vancouver Olympics).
La Nina, on the other hand, brings dry winters to the Southwest and cold
snowy winters to the Pacific Northwest mountains.
East coast weather isn't much affected by these two brothers.
So, what phase are we in now? In July, the Pacific transitioned from a one-
year El Nino back to La Nina. We can anticipate moderate La Nina winter,
starting in January 2011.
