Football is not so much a beautiful game, but more a way of life for everyone at the Spanish club, as Owen Slot discovered
The word comes from the old country house a couple of hundred yards away from the Nou Camp and is as follows: Barcelona do not only produce the best footballers, they produce the best people, too.
They spend hours working on football technique; they spend longer honing personality. There is an opinion at large that a requirement to be a world-beating athlete in any sport is a certain hardness, a cold-blooded arrogance, but here at La Masia you will spend your teenage years having the conceit knocked out of your system.
And if they cannot mould you, if you will not embrace their values — respect, humility, discipline — you are gone. Barca career over.
La Masia is Spanish for “country house”. This one, here in Barcelona, is like the Willy Wonka chocolate factory. It is where every young boy wants to be. It is the football factory where dreams genuinely do come true. It is where Lionel Messi was moulded, where a 13-year-old Andr閟 Iniesta cried because he was homesick and where V韈tor Vald閟 was disciplined for playing football tennis in the dormitory after lights out.
Whatever you think of Barcelona and their highfalutin, holier-than-thou aspirations, it is unarguable that the backbone of the team that Manchester United face on Saturday is the most successful youth development system in world football.
The academy is called La Cantera. Its boarding school is La Masia. Every day the Bar?a wannabes step out of the front door and there it is in front of them, the Nou Camp, the reminder of where they hope to end up. Indeed, the Masia dormitory is too small, so older boys sleep in accommodation actually within the stadium itself.
What is the secret, I ask Carlos Fulguera, the director of La Masia? You have a model where 50 per cent of your first team are expected to come from La Cantera. Why is the production line so successful? How is it that you have made Catalonia into the greatest hotbed in football?
Fulguera starts a long answer, thinks again and then gives a short one. “The level of control over these children is the crucial thing,” he says. “We believe we can influence the children’s human development. That’s the difference.”
A boy selected for La Cantera naturally feels quite good about himself. “There are some children who get the badge of the club on their shirt and suddenly think they are the best,” Fulguera says, smiling. The bottom line is they are told to leave ego behind.
“If they are five minutes late for class, it is wrong and you have to make them know that this is disrespectful to their teachers,” he says. “If they say in dinner, ‘I don’t like my food’, you discipline them, too.”
Likewise, they must make their beds and get their own breakfast. Punishments include suspension from training, missing their weekend game, or worse, not getting a ticket for the next Bar?a match at the Nou Camp.
If they fall behind at school? “We don’t chastise them. But what is non-negotiable is their attitude, they have to try to do their best. A child who has no respect for his teacher is a danger to the club.”
This is strong language. Fulguera says “a kid who is arrogant is going to be a bad influence on the other children”. They call a top kid “un crack” — from the English, a crack player. “Talent and footballing qualities alone are not sufficient to be un crack,” Fulguera says. “Without the values, they are not equipped to be successful.”
This phenomenally prescriptive education is continued at La Cantera, where football principles swap neatly for life values. Here, they have three objectives in any match: they must be the more creative team playing the more offensive football; they must be the more sporting team, be less aggressive and commit fewer fouls; and they must win.
They must not stop either. Even when they are ahead, they are obliged to carry on scoring more goals, more creatively, less aggressively. Idealistic, yes. but two days from Wembley, it is hard to say the formula is not working.
A 15-minute coach ride from La Masia takes the boys every day to a posh suburb of the city and Collegi LleXIII, named after the Pope, not the player. Here, the moulding continues.
It is almost stating the obvious that almost every boy at this school would like to play for Bar?a, so it would be easy for a superstar culture to develop for those who genuinely have a chance. But the school will not stand for it.
“Normality is very important for the Masia boys,” Maribel Pascual, the head of studies, says. “It is very important that when they get to school, they are all equal. Otherwise they lose touch with reality.”
Virtually the only difference is that the Masia boys are not allowed to play in inter-class football matches. It can also get complicated. When Iniesta was finishing his bachillerato, he was already so entwined in the Bar?a first-team squad that he kept up up with his studies by phone to his teachers.
Pascual describes Iniesta as “a complete person”. She is proud that almost everyone from La Masia finishes school, but says that Iniesta, followed by Vald閟, is as scholarly as they come.
Another statistic of which the club are particularly proud is that 11 of the Bar?a B-team squad are doubling up as university undergraduates.
The same could not be said of Messi. “He has a different type of intelligence,” she says. “His total existence revolves around football. When he first came here he was very timid, but he always behaved well in class and was polite, but all his energy was for football.
“I would say to him: ‘You have to put more effort into studies. Perhaps football won’t work for you, perhaps you will be injured’. But the moment he was chosen for the first team, by Frank Rijkaard, everything I tried to tell him about education went out the window.”
The statistics here tell the tale. In the first and second teams, 14 of the 33 players are Catalan. Add the coaches, Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova, and it is 16 from 35. How come?
At the Sergio Busquets Burgos Stadium, in the working-class town, Badia del Valles, 20 minutes outside the city, we get an answer. This is where Busquets was taken as a child by his father, who also played for Bar?a, and where one of the coaches was Javier Fern醤dez, his uncle. He started as a right winger, but, as Fern醤dez says, “We were always clear that he was going to be a footballer. And like everyone else here, he wanted to play for Bar?a.”
There are three six-year-olds at the club at present who are already being monitored by Bar?a scouts. “And then there are all the other fathers here who want their boys to play for Bar?a, too,” Fern醤dez says.
FC Barcelona, in Catalan culture, often seems an obligation rather than a choice. Fern醤dez, though, is a Real Madrid fan, others in the club are Espanyol fans; they differ on who they support here, but they remain bound by one overarching influence.
“There are 1,400 football clubs in Catalonia,” Fern醤dez says. And many of them model themselves on Big Brother. He says they attempt to use the model of not only Bar?a’s offensive football but of the values they require from their players. Like Bar?a, they have penalties for those who stray. “If you have no respect, you are out,” Fern醤dez says.
Barcelona, in other words, can feel less like a football club and more a way of life. But then when you see Busquets diving, or the way the entire team played in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Real, you wonder if it is simply just great PR. Put that to Fulguera and his answer is strong.
“Barca is a model of good behaviour,” he says. “I don’t see another team play like this. Bar?a has three qualities above other clubs: we have talent, we have the personality of the players and we have a capacity for self-criticism. When we lose, we look at ourselves. We never talk about referees. No other club is self-critical like us.”
There is no other club that make such grandiose claims. It takes good people to triumph in football, they say. And so they put their personalities to the test at Wembley as well as their football.
