“The shares are up on talk of management changes,” said Sami Sarkamies, a
Helsinki-based analyst with Nordea Bank. “There may also be some relief
owing to the shipment start for the E7 handset.”
“We think Elop, who has been impressive so far, has a smart plan in store,
” Morgan Stanley analysts Patrick Standaert and Ehud Gelblum wrote today in
a report. “This coupled with attractive risk-reward, means we would be
long” before the investor meeting.
New Strategy
Separately, Nokia said its E7 business handset began shipping today. The 599
-euro ($811) device was delayed from last year after being announced at the
Nokia World conference.
“We don’t expect Nokia to adopt Windows Phone 7 for even the U.S. market,
but there are plenty of other areas to cooperate,” said Sarkamies in a
report last week. “Nokia may further try to borrow from the Android
ecosystem by becoming more compatible with it.”
The only high-level appointment Elop has made so far is marketing chief
Jerri DeVard, who joined the company at the beginning of the year. Elop took
over the smartphone unit after Vanjoki’s last day of work in October. Mary
McDowell, a veteran of Hewlett-Packard Co. and Compaq Computer Corp. who’s
been at Nokia since 2004, is the third North American in top management
beside DeVard and the Canadian CEO. | k********n

because of the failure of a mobile phone called the Kin, the loss of market share in smartphone software and the need
for more innovation in that area, the board said in the filing.
Ballmer has already shown a desire to appoint engineers or product experts to run divisions. Stephen Elop, who left to
run Nokia Oyj in September, was replaced by engineering chief Kurt DelBene, rather than marketing executive Chris
Capossela. Elop had run Microsoft’s business unit, its biggest source of sales.
