New York Times on Sunday (Mar. 15) had a critique about two books, the first
about disappearing hutongs in Beijing (in web page 2) and the second,
receding Old Shaghai (starting at web page 6).
Holly Brubach, Raze High the Roof Beams, Comrade; Morning China's Lostr
Horizon.
The critique can be found by goping to www.nytimes.com and search with "
hutong."
My comment: Though hutongs were mysterious in Taiwan (whie I was there) , I

this way:
"I went to Beijing for business 18 months ago and
wandered around the hutongs, with bulldozers nearby.
they were really beautiful and timeless, and the
people there seemed friendly and happy. I was really
sad that they were all likely to be destroyed.
"I don't know the old areas of Shanghai so well, apart
from the Bund which is basically colonial. Have you
seen the movie 'Empire of the Sun'? it had some nice
