A wide open French Open women’s tournament ended in historic fashion as Li
Na became the first Chinese woman to win a Grand Slam singles title. The 29-
year-old used a deadly combination of power and consistency to defeat
Francesca Schiavone, last year’s winner, in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(0).
Li led throughout and bossed Schiavone around with her forehand. Schiavone
is a crafty and intense player, but she couldn’t blunt Li’s power and had
trouble holding serve. After Li won, she acted as if she was the 50th
Chinese player to win a major singles title, not the first.
“Today’s my friend’s birthday," she said nonchalantly. "I think this is
gift for her."
Li’s victory is the latest surprise in women’s tennis, which is without a
strong leader for the first time, and there are no prodigies showing any
signs of breaking through. This was the sixth straight Grand Slam final
between two women older than 25. Li will reach No. 4 in the world rankings
Monday, tied for the highest-ever by a woman from Asia. |
