I must admit that I was hoping for Roger to win another title but Novak was
simply too strong and deserved the victory.
Roger has improved again in recent months. His topspin backhand is more
consistent and at times even dangerous, which it wasn't in recent years.
He is also coming forward much more and he is very effective up at the net.
At the end of the day it still wasn't enough to beat Novak who was certainly
at his best form.
In my opinion there are 2 primary reasons why Roger couldn't beat Novak:
#1: A significantly weaker backhand
Roger's topspin backhand improved in recent months but it is still too weak
to beat Novak.
Djokovic does not have a weakness in these baseline exchanges. His forehand
is superb and his backhand is one of the best of all-time.
Federer has the best forehand of all-time but his backhand is definitely a
weakness when he plays against someone as strong as Djokovic.
In longer rallies where Roger has to hit several backhands, Djokovic has a
clear advantage.
So the primary reason Djokovic beat Federer is the fact that he was able to
control more rallies from the baseline by attacking Roger's backhand.
#2: Mental toughness
In this match Novak was tougher mentally. The key statistic here is
converted break points.
Roger converted only 4 out of 23 break points or 17%.
Novak on the other hand converted 6 out of 13 break points or 46%.
I do believe that part of the reason for this is again Roger's slightly
weaker backhand side. Novak managed to play his favorite patterns and attack
Roger's backhand on the most important points!
Conclusion:
It was great to see Roger adjust and play such an aggressive game. He came
to the net 59 times and won 39 out of those points or 66%.
This is obviously how he needs to play but in order to beat Novak on a day
like this he still needs to hit better topspin backhands and he needs to
convert better on break points.
