an incentive package for Texas Instruments Inc. to build a research and dev
elopment center that will employ 375 people.
TI said earlier this year it would close a 45-year-old semiconductor factory
in Stafford, a 196-acre site that produces 150 mm silicon wafers. That move
would cut 500 jobs, according to documents filed with Sugar Land.
However, the Dallas-based chipmaker decided to relocate the Stafford researc
h and development group for its core embedded processing division about five
miles away to Sugar Land. Both cities are southwest of Houston.
TI plans to build a 155,000-square-foot office on seven acres in Sugar Land.
The company expects construction to be finished by early 2014.
The project will enable TI to relocate 375 jobs to Sugar Land, company spoke
swoman Kim Morgan said Wednesday. TI will invest more than $35 million in th
e project, she said.
Sugar Land, its economic development arm and Fort Bend County offered a join
t incentive package to keep TI in the county. Here are details of the packag
e approved Tuesday:
Fort Bend County approved a 75 percent tax abatement on real improvements an
d personal property for 10 years for TI.
Sugar Land City Council approved a 50 percent tax abatement for 10 years for
TI.
Sugar Land Development Corp. approved a $2.5 million grant to TI.
The incentives are contingent on TI making a $35 million investment and crea
ting 375 “high-paying jobs,” said Regina Morales, director of economic dev
elopment for Sugar Land.
Sugar Land expects to see economic impact from the TI jobs, which carry an a
verage salary of $100,000, according to city documents. It also expects TI t
o book 750 hotel room nights a year.
