Department Description
Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department, located in Livermore,
California and Emeryville, CA, performs biological and bioengineering
research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative
energy. We are an interdisciplinary research group with a focus on both
basic and applied biological research. One of our goals is to address
problems with strong ties to national security, such as biodefense and
health security, through advanced technology development and new research
approaches. For example, we are one of the world-leaders in application of
microfluidic technology for biochemical analysis. An additional goal is to
develop the science base required by industry to produce clean, efficient,
and cost-effective biofuels on a commercial scale. This work is carried out
in partnership with the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute (
JBEI). The department is highly multidisciplinary and is comprised of
researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology
, microbiology, immunology and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical and
physical) and engineering (chemical, mechanical and bioengineering).

Postdoctoral Appointee
Job Summary
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D
. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives
and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee.
The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to
employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at
managements discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year
assignments. Post-doctoral salaries at Sandia are highly competitive ($85,
700).
Primary Job Duties
Sandia/California Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department is seeking a
postdoctoral appointee to join a multidisciplinary team using recent
advances in gene editing technology (CRISPR) for genome-wide knockout
screening in human cells and for development of novel in vivo CRISPR
delivery platforms. We aim to understand the fundamental mechanisms of viral
infection of biodefense-related pathogens through these studies with the
potential to discover host-directed therapeutic targets. The successful
postdoctoral candidate will help develop large-scale gene knockout screening
assays to test against multiple virus models, work with an engineering team
to develop nanoparticle-based CRISPR delivery vehicles, and transition in
vitro findings to animal models. The successful postdoctoral candidate will
also be responsible for the effective communication of research results
through publications and conference presentations.
Required
Candidates must have a recent PhD degree in virology, molecular biology,
cell biology, immunology, or a related field. The candidate must be a strong
individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team comprising engineers
, biologists, chemists, and programmers, within the framework of a milestone
-driven research project. Strong written and oral communication skills are
required. A demonstrated record of high technical achievement (e.g. as
evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals) and the
demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research is required.
Desired
Experience in the following areas is highly desired: Gene editing technology
(e.g. CRISPR), high-throughput screening methods, next-gen sequencing,
imaging, handling viruses at Biosafety Level 2 (or higher), and animal
models of infectious disease.
Security Clearance
No clearance required. This position does not currently require a
Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a
pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks,
law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications.
Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background
screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use,
falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other
indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated
, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in
termination of employment. If hired without a clearance, and one
subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-
granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes
personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and
employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required
federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security
clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the
appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
