Lawyers letter is here about the current status about the project: Here is
her letter:
Hi all,
You are receiving this email because you have expressed an interested in the
proposed Azul project—the subsidized housing project being planned for the
area behind the southeast corner of the HEB parking lot. The 9-acre complex
would be surrounded by the Canyon Creek greenbelt hike & bike trail to the
south and southeast, and Antler Lane to the east. The 108-unit project is
slated to have 96 low-income subsidized one and two bedroom units, and 12
market rate units. The area is zoned for Spicewood Elementary and Canyon
Vista Middle schools, both of which are already severely overcrowded,
meaning the district would undoubtedly do a boundary change if the project
is located in this area.
From what I can tell, the project has two remaining hurdles before it can be
built. The first is that the Texas Department of Housing and Community
Affairs will have to approve the application so that the developers can
receive funding. If they do, then approximately 70% of the project will be
funded by Austin and Texas taxpayers. The second hurdle is that the Austin
City Council, who has already approved a $1.6 million loan to the project
developers, has to approve the zoning change required to build on this
greenbelt space.
I have created a petition right now to stop the project. It is addressed to
both the Austin City Council, and to the Texas Department of Housing and
Community Affairs, and asks them to deny funding and the zoning change. The
petition is neutral to the building of subsidized housing in District 6, but
focuses on why the proposed location is a bad choice. It is my strong
belief that the Austin City Council is not properly vetting the planning of
this and other projects, and is in the habit of rubber-stamping such zoning
change requests unless communities such as ours step in and do the heaving
lifting, showing them why the proposed developments are inappropriate.
I have heard that from the state level, a decision is to be made this week,
so time is of the essence. PLEASE READ AND SIGN THE PETITION, AND SEND IT TO
AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN. We need the full support of the community to
demonstrate to the TDHCA and City Council that this planned development is
bad for our city and a poor use of taxpayer dollars.
Here is the link to the petition.
Thank you so much for your consideration of this important issue!
