well, I never paid attention to it, or tbh I just did not know the answer,
until recently.
Reciprocality, as defined by Tommy Angelo, is the exact one word answer to
this question. Reciprocality is "any difference between you and your
opponents that affects your bottom line". Angelo further explained: "
Reciprocality says that when you and your opponents would do the same thing
in a given situation, no money moves, and when you do something different,
it does."
what does it mean? well, when you are folded to and pick up AA at button,
you open raise, but who does not? so, when almost everyone plays this hand
the same way and it is a good play, no reciprocality. you don't make money
because you make that play. on the other hand, if your AA got into some
postflop actions that indicate you are behind, you can get away from it,
while most of your opponents on this same spot cannot get away and usually
will lose a buyin. then you have the reciprocality, you got the edge, coz
you play better on this spot than your opponents.
This concept got me thinking about game selection and the reason to play.
when we sit down on a table, if we are not thinking about paying the tuition
just to learn the game, instead we want to make money. then we need to know
our edge. can we spot the fishes on the table? what are they doing wrong?
how big is the reciprocality, i.e., how much better can we play on certain
spots than the fishes? for example, how much better can we thin value bet or
how often can we avoid that awfully bad bluff etc etc. equally important,
how good are the best players on the table? how are the chances that we will
get exploited by them?
of course knowing what our edge is, what reciprocality means, probably does
not help us improve as a poker player. but it certainly help us understand
why we play poker, we play because we believe we play better on more spots
than our opponents do. it is never about the cards. it is about the people.
