Feds: Flint man withdrew $1.5M at Detroit casinos due to bank error
Robert Snell/ The Detroit News
Detroit— A Flint man won a different type of jackpot following a bank error
that let him make unlimited withdrawals from his account at Detroit casinos
, which he parlayed into a $1.5 million payday.
That's according to an indictment filed Tuesday in federal court.
Ronald Page, 56, was indicted on stealing bank funds after prosecutors said
he withdrew $1,543,104 from his account at Detroit casinos during a 16-day
spree in August 2009.
The spree stopped when bank officials realized his account was overdrawn by
more than $1.5 million.
Page is portrayed in the indictment as a frequent gambler at Detroit and Las
Vegas casinos from January 2009 through February 2010.
The alleged theft relied on a simple checking account.
Detroit's three casinos let gamblers withdraw money from their bank accounts
by using machines similar to an ATM inside the gambling halls.
Page opened his account at LaSalle Bank in May 2004.
When LaSalle was acquired by Bank of America in 2008, an error let Page make
unlimited cash withdrawals and overdrafts, according to the indictment.
Page capitalized on the mistake, according to prosecutors.
On Aug. 1, 2009, he withdrew $312,000 from Greektown Casino.
That same day, he withdrew $51,726 from MGM Grand Casino.
The next day, he withdrew more than $200,000 from MGM and Motor City Casino.
He liked playing the same numbers, according to the feds.
He withdrew $51,477 from Motor City on Aug. 3, 2009. Two days later, he
withdrew the same amount — from the same casino.
From Aug. 8-9, he pocketed more than $360,000 from Motor City.
Days later, he withdrew almost $515,000 from Motor City.
On Aug. 18, 2009, he rolled snake eyes, according to the indictment.
He tried to withdraw $52,000 at Greektown Casino, but was denied.
He walked into Motor City Casino the next day and tried to withdraw $51,400
and again was blocked.
The bank called him two days later. His account was overdrawn.
Bank officials demanded immediate repayment.
"As of this date, no money has been returned to the bank," the indictment
reads.
