It's all driven by demand and supply. Normal in the summer as the gas price
is usually higher. Some companies provide the option of "Wild Card" where
you will get mid-size or above for the rate of mid-size car. Guess what you
may get, Minivan in the summer, and convertible in the winter.
I used National where I can pick any car on certain section of the parking
lot. I can always find SUV in the Summer, but none in the Winter.
Thrifty and Dollar offer lower rates compared to other companies, but their
cars and services are not as good. If available, I would pay a bit more
money with National/Alamo/Enterprise/Avis/Hertz/Budget.

I have reserved a car from thrifty website but have not paid for it yet.
What is the policy to cancel it? I read the term but could not figure out if
any penalty if cancel the reservation.

afternoon, they might give you free upgradebecaue they run out of the full-
size.
but the rental car people sometime will try to trick you into paying the
upgrade from your own pocket.
