For the coming weekend, I will work as a volunteer for the very first Ironman Wales race which will be hold in a town about an hour and half driving from where I live on Sunday 11th September. On Saturday, I will work in the registration area, and on Sunday I will marshall part of the cycling route.
The weather forecast for Sunday is devastating, 15C with 28mph wind and heavy rain shower. In the race information pack, one sentence in the rules and regulations section catched my eye, "No form of locomotion other than running, walking or crawling is allowed." This reminds me about what Dean Karnazes have done in Western State 100. Gonna be fun! |

这costal national park 26mph的风，估计算得上是非常tough的Ironman之一了。

course has been changed from south beach to north beach. this is a spectacular yet tough course especially with the strong crosswind. saw a few
super fit athletes running, cycling and swimming. heard some german
bragging about his 4 times in kona. to be honest i think he talked too much,
definitely not a typical german guy...
only see one cervelo so far... but most bikes are tri bikes.
why is the race tshirt so expensive? still debating whether to get one or
not...

the rear right tyre of my rental car blew up on A40 while I was driving at
70mph. I have to pulled up to a side road and called AA for rescuing. While
waiting in the car, I was debating whether I should still go to Tenby or
just go back home. Around 8:00, the AA van arrived and a guy helped me to
put the replacement wheel on. With the replacement wheel, I had to drive
really slow, but I managed to get there around 9:30. On my way, I saw a
couple of athletes cycling on the road.
So when I got to town centre where I was supposed to marshalling, they all
finished the swimming session and went on their cycling session. Due to the
strong wind, the swimming had been moved from the south beach to the north
beach, which means the athletes have to run 1000m to T1 after swimming.
Around 13:00 the male elites started get back to town and this was already 6
hours after the race had started (7:00). After they got out of T2, you can
tell some of them were still quite fresh while others were exhausting. And
there was a minute silence in memory of the September 11th around 13:30.
The first male elite (Jeremy Jurkiewicz) finished in 09:04:20 with the
second one (Aaron Farlow) in 09:04:25. It was really a good chasing! I don't
think you see this kind of close finish often. The first female elite
finished in 10:01:19.
The atmosphere in Tenby was great. I believe this is the first time this
small lovely Welsh town has so many ppl from all over the world in one
weekend. People in different age groups were nice, friendly and supportative
. It was more like a carnival instead of a race.
Some random thoughts.
1) So many things can go wrong. I saw someone dropped out the gaming in the
swimming session as his arm was broken while someone crawling over him...
Some ppl had bike accident, and some injured in the running. To be honest,
to finish is already a huge accomplishment. Yet, by any chance, you are not
able to finish, the courage to carry on and sign up for the next race is the
most important thing. Never ever give up.
2) Ironman is something not for everyone. It is a lonely game. During the
race you spend most of your time on your bike with no one's around. Male and
female elites normally get a lot of attention. For most athletes, they just
try to finish their own goal and compete with themselves.
3) I have promised myself, one day, I will do it. I am a slow person, and
will start step by step. Sprint->Olympic->70.3->Ironman

IM Wales: i've got the double of uk. Enjoying my 2nd Ironman victory. After
a stormy swim in the atlantic, cycled a very windy bike course, including
2400m of altitude. Took over the lead at the 1st of 4 loops in the Marathon.
The hilly run course with it's 800m of altitude, made IM Wales by far the
toughest Ironman i done. |
