三.感恩的祈祷是崇拜的一个特别部分(腓4:6),是上帝向万人所吩咐的(诗65:2);
护理招聚公共聚会时,不可漠不关心,或故意忽略,或停止聚会(赛56:6-7;来10:25;
用全部时间,或同众人,或在私下,举行礼拜,并尽本分行必要和慈善的事(赛58:13;

CHAPTER XXI
Of Religious Worship, and the Sabbath Day
I. The light of nature showeth that there is a God, who hath lordship and so
vereignty over all, is good, and doth good unto all, and is therefore to be
feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served, with all the he
art, and with all the soul, and with all the might.[404] But the acceptable
way of worshiping the true God is instituted by himself, and so limited by h
is own revealed will, that he may not be worshiped according to the imaginat
ions and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible repr
esentation, or any other way not prescribed in the Holy Scripture.[405]
II. Religious worship is to be given to God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
; and to him alone;[406] not to angels, saints, or any other creature:[407]
and, since the fall, not without a Mediator; nor in the mediation of any oth
er but of Christ alone.[408]
III. Prayer, with thanksgiving, being one special part of religious worship,
[409] is by God required of all men:[410] and, that it may be accepted, it i
s to be made in the name of the Son,[411] by the help of his Spirit,[412] ac
cording to his will,[413] with understanding, reverence, humility, fervency,
faith, love, and perseverance;[414] and, if vocal, in a known tongue.[415]
IV. Prayer is to be made for things lawful;[416] and for all sorts of men li
ving, or that shall live hereafter:[417] but not for the dead,[418] nor for
those of whom it may be known that they have sinned the sin unto death.[419]
V. The reading of the Scriptures with godly fear,[420] the sound preaching[4
21] and conscionable hearing of the Word, in obedience unto God, with unders
tanding, faith, and reverence,[422] singing of psalms with grace in the hear
t;[423] as also, the due administration and worthy receiving of the sacramen
ts instituted by Christ, are all parts of the ordinary religious worship of
God:[424] beside religious oaths,[425] vows,[426] solemn fastings,[427] and
thanksgivings upon special occasions,[428] which are, in their several times
and seasons, to be used in an holy and religious manner.[429]
VI. Neither prayer, nor any other part of religious worship, is now, under t
he gospel, either tied unto, or made more acceptable by any place in which i
t is performed, or towards which it is directed:[430] but God is to be worsh
iped everywhere,[431] in spirit and truth;[432] as, in private families[433]
daily,[434] and in secret, each one by himself;[435] so, more solemnly in t
he public assemblies, which are not carelessly or willfully to be neglected,
or forsaken, when God, by his Word or providence, calleth thereunto.[436]
VII. As it is the law of nature, that, in general, a due proportion of time
be set apart for the worship of God; so, in his Word, by a positive, moral,
and perpetual commandment binding all men in all ages, he hath particularly
appointed one day in seven, for a Sabbath, to be kept holy unto him:[437] wh
ich, from the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, was the
last day of the week; and, from the resurrection of Christ, was changed into
the first day of the week,[438] which, in Scripture, is called the Lord’s
day,[439] and is to be continued to the end of the world, as the Christian S
abbath.[440]
VIII. This Sabbath is then kept holy unto the Lord, when men, after a due pr
eparing of their hearts, and ordering of their common affairs beforehand, do
not only observe an holy rest, all the day, from their own works, words, an
d thoughts about their worldly employments and recreations,[441] but also ar
e taken up, the whole time, in the public and private exercises of his worsh
ip, and in the duties of necessity and mercy.[442]
[404] Romans 1:20. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the
world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even h
is eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse. Acts 17:24. G

eart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. Joshua 24:14. Now therefore
fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the god
s which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; an
d serve ye the LORD. Mark 12:33. And to love him with all the heart, and wit
h all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, a
nd to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings
and sacrifices.

thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. Matthew 15:9. But in vain

eeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things. Matthew 4:9-10. And

no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb ou
t of the midst of the fire: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a grave
n image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female, The l
ikeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl t
hat flieth in the air, The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground
, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth: And lest
thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the m
oon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to wors
hip them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all natio
ns under the whole heaven. But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you fort
h out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inh
eritance, as ye are this day. Exodus 20:4-6. Thou shalt not make unto thee a
ny graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or th
at is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou sh
alt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am
a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto t
he third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto
thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Colossians 2:23. W
hich things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and
neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou se
