According to a national survey done last year by researchers in the
University of Minnesota’s department of sociology, atheists are the least
trusted minority group in America. They are also the group that parents
would least like their children to marry. “Atheists,” said Penny Edgell,
the lead researcher in the study, “offer a glaring exception to the rule of
increasing social tolerance over the last 30 years.”
Moreover, only 45 percent of Americans said they would vote for an atheist
in a presidential election if their party nominated a well-qualified
candidate, according to a recent USA Today/Gallup poll. Atheists ranked
below every other group listed: African Americans (95 percent), women (88
percent), Hispanics (87 percent), people who have been married three times (
67 percent), people over age 72 (57 percent), and gays (55 percent).
第一次知道这个，我到无所谓，我过去就是无神论，也没觉得无神论有什么大不了的。
可能一般美国人对无神论太不了解，因此不信任无神论。看来无神论要多发声啊，好让
别人能了解你。了解多了，误会就会减少。多介绍自己的长处优点比较好，动则攻击他
人的信仰会适得其反。有些东西也是没办法的事，少数派要得到承认，得讲究一点策略
。我是反对歧视的。我支持是骡子是马，牵出来遛遛。不过有些东西是人本性使然，跟
信什么关系不大。 |

How can you be proud of this? This research shows religious people's
discrimination against atheists.
Christians' tryannical claim of Jesus as the only way to heaven is a typical
example of intolerance.
This research reminded us: when we are fighting to protect the rights of
women, African Americans and gays, we are still ingoring the rights of
atheists.

generally well-qualified person for president" if they were an atheist for

The religious affiliations in America are changing rapidly. Between 1990 and
2001 the proportion of United States citizens without religious
affiliations apparently rose from 8% to 14% while adults believing in
Christianity dropped by 1% per year in that time. (2001 ARIS study;
ReligiousTolerance.Org entry on it) If this drop continues over a generation
the United States will change dramatically. Not all without religious
affiliations are Atheists, agnostics, or freethinkers, but many are. |

bankers -- regardless their religion,they are as trust-worthy as lawyers in
US I guess.
politicans -- probably the least trust-worthy but I don't think the country
will ever elect an athesit president.
