澳大利亚人口最多的新南威尔士州选举,在联邦政府执政的工党大败,16年来右翼政党

SYDNEY (AFP) – The Australian Labor Party, which controls the government,
on Saturday suffered a crushing electoral defeat in New South Wales, losing
a state it has ruled for 16 years.
Party officials termed the defeat a "massacre" as outgoing New South Wales
premier Kristina Keneally conceded defeat to the Liberal candidate Barry O'
Farrell after a swing of about 17 percent against the incumbent government.
"This is the victory for everyone who wanted to make New South Wales number
one again," O'Farrell said told supporters in claiming victory. "We won't
let you down."
"We won tonight seats not only have we not won before, we won tonight seats
we'd not dreamed of ever winning."
American-born Keneally had earlier acknowledged the Labor loss, telling a
gathering in eastern Sydney that "the community has spoken and we accept it
with humility and grace," she said.
"The truth is the people of New South Wales have trusted us with government
for 16 years. They did not leave us, we left them."
The right-leaning Liberal/National coalition needed only a 7.6 percent swing
to win control of the country's most populous state which takes in Sydney
and the coal-mining town of Newcastle.
But the Australian Broadcasting Corporation predicts that the vote will go
well over that, with the Liberal/National group claiming 70 seats in the New
South Wales lower house compared with Labor's 21.
Labor member of the upper house Luke Foley said the party had suffered "a
massacre, a slaughter the likes of which none of us have seen".
"The heartland has gone. We'll save some sticks of furniture. Seats we've
never ever lost we will lose tonight," he told ABC television.
"People lost all faith in our ability to govern and our integrity in
government."
The change of government in New South Wales follows the fall of the country'
s second most populous state Victoria to Liberal leader Ted Baillieu.
Labor Prime Minister Julia Gillard rules a national coalition government
which has a slender one-seat majority in Canberra.
