New York (CNN) -- A 27-year-old Brooklyn resident was charged Friday with
providing material support to militants in Pakistan and had planned to join
"radical jihadists" in the country's restive tribal region, according to a U
.S. attorney's office statement.
Agron Hasbajrami, who holds both American and Albanian citizenship, was
arrested Tuesday at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York
carrying a tent and other survival gear.
Authorities said a search of Hasbajrami's residence uncovered a note that
read, "Do not wait for invasion, the time is martyrdom time."
The suspect was allegedly in contact with militants in Pakistan's Federally
Administered Tribal Areas, a semilaw
less region home to extremist groups fighting NATO and Afghan forces as well
as Pakistani army regulars.
He sent $1,000 to Pakistan to support his contact's "terrorist efforts,"
according to the U.S. attorney's office statement. But he experienced
difficulty fundraising in New York, saying donors became apprehensive "when
they hear it is for jihad," the statement said.
Authorities said Hasbajrami told his contact that he wished to travel abroad
to "marry with the girls in paradise."
If convicted, Hasbajrami faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
