IOWA CITY, Iowa - A 21-year-old Iowa City man accused of sexually assaulting
a woman who was showing him her apartment for lease last week is on an
immigration hold at the Johnson County Jail.
A judge set Peng Tang’s bond on Monday at $750,000 cash only, but jail
officials said they also are holding him for immigration authorities. Tang,
who faces a charge of first-degree kidnapping, is scheduled for a
preliminary hearing Monday.
He has been assigned a public defender.
According to a police report, Tang is accused of entering the woman’s
apartment Thursday evening under the guise he was looking for a place to sub
-lease. The two didn’t know each other before that night, according to a
criminal complaint.
The woman let Tang into her apartment and was showing him the bedroom when
Tang is accused of grabbing her hands, trying to tie them up behind her back
and locking the bedroom door, according to the complaint. The woman
attempted to talk to Tang, but he’s accused of putting a towel into her
mouth, police reported.
Tang, according to police, then forced the woman to turn off her cell phone
and sexually assaulted her. During the assault, according to the compliant,
Tang told the woman, “You have better follow my requirements because I have
a knife.”
Tang also is accused of threatening to post sexually explicit photos of the
woman online if the woman called police, according to the complaint.
Investigators served search warrants at Tang’s residence at 923 E. College
St. #8 in Iowa City and found evidence corroborating events the victim
reported, according to police. Peng later admitted to having committed the
offense, police reported.
First-degree kidnapping, which includes sexual abuse as a lesser offense, is
punishable by up to life in prison. |
