…and they get served.
Sorry if you were expecting a joke or some twist of discrimination but for
the life of me I had a hell-of-a-time searching the Internet for any case of
discrimination or Chick-fil-a policy that says they would get turned away.
Actually, what I did find was humorous at best and hypocritical in its worst.
According to the Huffington Post “Gay Voices” section:
“The media firestorm over Chick-fil-A’s financial contributions to
anti-gay organizations seems to have no end in sight.
Now, after Boston Mayor Thomas Menino vowed to block the fast food chain
from opening a franchise in his city, a letter penned by the Massachusetts
lawmaker to Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy has surfaced in the blogosphere.”
I specifically highlighted the “anti-gay organizations” to bring that up
later on.
Included in this letter was:
“You called supporters of gay marriage ‘prideful.’ Here in Boston, to
borrow your own words, we are ‘guilty as charged.’ We are indeed full of
pride for our support of same-sex marriage and our work to expand freedom to
all people. We are proud that our state and our city have led the way for
the country on equal marriage rights…
There is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail and no
place for your company alongside it.”
This letter was in response to the Founder’s son’s interview recently in
the Baptists Press:
“When writer K. Allan Blume pressed Cathy, who is the son of company
founder S. Truett Cathy, about his company’s contributions to those
established anti-gay organizations, he responded, “Well, guilty as charged.”
He continued, “We are very much supportive of the family — the
biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a
family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God
thanks for that…we know that it might not be popular with everyone, but
thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and
operate on biblical principles.”
Supportive of family, married to wives, thanking God and biblical principles
…ugh yuk! The hatred! It was hard for me to read through all that muddied
hateful language, it is like nails on a chalkboard. Did that part about
being “anti-gay” and “hating them” sting you as much as it stung me? Oh,
you didn’t see that part either?
Remember the “anti-gay organizations” I bolded? Well the Huffington Post
made a little mistake by letting the truth out a little later on when they
said:
“Though Chick-fil-A’s contributions to “traditional family”
organizations like Exodus International and the Family Research Council have
been well-reported for some time…”
A lot of people out there, people you know on networks like facebook, have
been blowing this out of proportion by making assumptions that being “pro-
traditional family” automatically means that you are “anti-gay”. That is
completely ridiculous and you can see how out of hand it has gotten with
some of the pictures that have been posted.
Such as:
When we don't like something, we don't go there. When Liberals don't like
something, they demand a boycott and protest.
"Pro-Traditional Family" broken down into bullet points for simple minds.
I posted this on my facebook fanpage earlier today in response to the latter
image:
“When I say “I support chicken sandwiches”, if you hear “I think
burgers molest children, will destroy the Earth, that God hates burgers and
I think we should boycott them”, that is you creating an avenue to project
your own hatred and intolerance.” – the Generation Y Conservative (BTW,
that is your hint to go there and “Like” the page)
Not to mention I am sure that the hateful language and images were put
together by opposition to Chick-fil-a, not supporters.
“Being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn.”-
Benjamin Franklin
Apply this quote to the last image’s final line “Chick-fil-a has given
over $3 million to help promote these (bulleted phrases) ideas. Assume as
much and you are just as guilty as the person who created the image.
Further investigation into the “supported” organizations finds a different
(read “actual”) truth:
Exodus International’s Policy Statements clearly says this:
“Criminalization of Homosexuality
Exodus International believes that every human life, regardless of
sexual orientation, is of inestimable and equal worth to God and that
defending this principle is foundational in offering a Christian response to
any issue. As such, Exodus International has not supported and will not
support any legislation that deprives others of life and dignity based on
their sexual orientation or the expression of such within the confines of a
consensual adult relationship. We stand with all who are defending this
basic, biblical tenet and remain committed to sharing the compassion, hope
and life-giving grace and truth of Jesus Christ.
Finally, we stand with the LGBT community both in spirit, and when
necessary, legally and physically, when violence rears it’s head in Uganda,
Jamaica or anywhere else in the world.
For more information, see the Official Exodus Statement Regarding Uganda
’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009.“
Family Research Council on the other hand may not be as graceful with their
wording. While they certainly have a colorful description of their views on
gay marriage, they at no point make reference to beliefs like those pointed
out in the image above. They seem to be more steadfast in their mission to
support the DEFINITION of marriage as it stands. That leads to a whole other
debate on whether gay couples are fighting for the definition or whether
they are fighting for the rights associated with that definition, which is
two different topics that we have gone over already in the past.
The point is, at no point do any of these organizations classify themselves
as “anti-gay”. A stinging label for a person who is “pro-choice” could
certainly be “pro-abortion” but that is irresponsible of the accuser and
detrimental to serious debates. The fact that “pro-traditional family” has
been changed by the opposition to “anti-gay” is then irresponsible and
lowering the level of discussion.
Boston’s Mayor, Thomas Menino, ended his letter with:
“There is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail and no
place for your company alongside it.”
Well thank you Boston for appointing a person who touts the Freedom Trail
without a realization that his own discrimination and blockading is the
exact opposite of the very term defined within that landmark.
