ago, president Clinton declared on the Daily Show that "tax payers made
money in TARP, you made money in TARP".
It is interesting you should mention TARP, let s clear some myth about TARP.
TARP originally was designed to be about 700B, but it never reached that
level. Congress later lowered the TARP cap to about 450B. Obama's stimulus,
the ARRA, was first 787B later increased to 831B.
Now where did the TARP money go? one can find daily reports on treasury
website. and I ll give you a summary:
1. money to save the banks, 245B out, 264B returned.
2. money to buy stressed assets 18B out, 8B returned.
3. money to rescue AIG, 68B out, 36B returned, with another 8B in AIG stocks
held by treasury.
4. money to rescue the auto makers: 80B out, 40B returned
5. money to assist home owners: 5B out, no return expected.
if you count #1,2,3, 331B went to "wall street", 316B is returned, Tax
Payers is still short 15B. Some participating banks have not returned the
money yet, so the 15B gap is expected to shring further. These programs are
devised under a republican president, by a former CEO with trememdous
investment experience and expertise.
#4, tax payer is still 50% worst off, with 40B out, treasury is still at a
loss with the GM stock its holding. This was after the bankruptcy law was
raped to give UAW (who got 20% stake in new GM) priority over the exisiting
bond holders (who were pretty much wiped out). This is a sold out of tax
payers and bond investors to buy support of UAW.
#5 well, kiss those tax money good bye for good.
so all in all, tax payers so far are out 60B in TARP program. 15B on wall
street, 40B on car companies, 5B on who know what.
if TARP fed any fat cats, it fed UAW fat cats after Obama admin took over.
