Just another day in Obama’s neighborhood.
The son of a community activist and a 13-year-old boy were among eight
people wounded in shootings on the South and West sides since Monday
afternoon.
Hal Baskin Jr., the 25-year-old son of Englewood activist Hal Baskin,
was shot in the stomach and buttocks around 5:40 p.m. Monday in the 6600
block of South Peoria Street. He was taken to Stroger Hospital and reported
in fair condition by his family.
A 30-year-old man with him was grazed in the head and taken to Advocate
Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in good condition.
The shooting happened two blocks south of the Peace Community Center
where the senior Hal Baskin, 60, is executive director. In a statement,
family spokesman Keith Harris called the shooting a random act and called
for calm.
“The family is asking that the police department be allowed to do their
job,” he wrote.
On Mother’s Day this year, Baskin Sr.’s great-nephew was killed one
block north and one block east of Monday’s shooting. “It’s heart-
wrenching,” Baskin, an gang member turned activist, told the Tribune after
Ronald Baskin’s killing. “This happens all too often. It’s all too common
in places like Chicago.”
But you know what, Mr. Baskin? Nobody cares unless they can score political
points off it. So good luck. Maybe you should get a concealed carry permit.
Well, once the state gets their act together and starts issuing them. |
