UC, CSU to start loan program for students who entered the country illegally
California public university students who can't take out federal loans becau
se of their immigration status soon will be able to borrow from their colleg
es instead.
Supported by UC and CSU and signed by the Governor Sunday, Senate Bill 1210
has established the California Dream Loan Program, which is expected to have
up to 3,000 borrowers in its first year.
"The Governor's approval of the Dream Loan Program is a win for California's
economy, a win for the UC and CSU, and a win for California students," said
the bill's sponsor, Senator Ricardo Lara, D-Huntington Park/Long Beach, in
a prepared statement.
"Higher education is critical for young people looking to advance in today's
economy, but young undocumented Californians haven't had equal access to hi
gher education," said Linda Leu, the Young Invincibles' California Policy an
d Research Director.
"The California DREAM Loan Program helps ensure that all young people have e
qual access to an affordable public higher education and a brighter future." | b*****e
