The predominantly white male nature of Federal Reserve leadership is coming
under criticism from a large number of Democratic elected officials who
believe the institution doesn’t adequately reflect the demographics of the
nation it is meant to serve.
The legislators said in a letter to Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen
Thursday that U.S. central bank leadership doesn’t represent the makeup of
Americans as a whole. They said central bank leaders are also drawn too
frequently from business and financial backgrounds.
The letter was signed by 10 senators and 116 members of the House of
Representatives. The effort to draft the letter was led by Sen. Elizabeth
Warren and Rep. John Conyers, Jr. No Republicans signed the letter, although
they were given the opportunity to do so. |
