Building a Wall Saves the Lives of Americans and Mexicans
Donald J. Trump proposes to build a wall along the border between the United
States and Mexico by compelling Mexico to make a one-time $5-10 billion
payment. The primary function of this wall would be keeping Mexicans from
entering the United States without visas. However, there is an understated
benefit of this wall, which will save lives of thousands of Americans AND
THOUSANDS OF MEXICANS.
The first part is easy to understand. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention report that during 2014, 47,055 drug overdose deaths occurred in
the United States and 900,000 adults and young adults ages 12 and older used
heroin in the past year. Most heroines enter the United States over the
nearly 2,000-mile Mexico border. While many have questioned that the
separation barrier between Israel and the West Bank as evidence that the
Trump wall will succeed in curbing illegal immigration into the United
States, nobody can question that it is more difficult to get a live person
through a border than a kilo of heroin, aside from penalty. Regardless it is
a good idea or not, having a wall will help to stop both undocumented
humans AND heroines crossing the border.
The second part is difficult to appreciate by some. It is estimated over
100,000 innocent Mexican people were killed in the Mexican Drug War. First,
if the wall reduces drug trafficking, it will reduce the power of drug
cartels and subsequently reduce the killings of Mexicans related to drugs.
Second, thousands Mexicans have died crossing the border; if a wall makes it
difficult to crossing, it will reduce the number of Mexico citizens trying
to, resulting in fewer related deaths.
As a Teacher of Biology, I encourage my students to propose provocative
hypotheses. Given that one of my students died of overdose (I do not know
and may never know if it is heroin or prescription), I am compelled to
propose the hypothesis that a border wall saves the lives of both Americans
AND Mexicans. Let us assume the cost of building a wall is 10 times, at $100
billion, and the prevented deaths by the wall from heroin traffic crossing
the border are only 10 or even 1 percent of heroin-related deaths.
Americans and Mexicans will do themselves a disservice not to test this
hypothesis.
