he evening of that event, McKenzie — who was born in Vietnam — couldn't
avoid walking through a line of Trump supporters as she returned home from
class.
"I could feel them staring at me. Then a couple of them, as I tried to cut
through the line, yelled to 'go back to where I came from,' or that I was '
sapping off the government' and that, I should be grateful," she recalls,
noting one even more painful slur. "It was 'Ching Chong Asians for Trump!'
And then they followed up after I didn't acknowledge them, with, 'Do you
even speak English?'"
Yesterday, Donald Trump came to speak on UWEC campus. While walking to and
from class throughout the day, it was unavoidable for me to pass through the
hundreds of people gathering to see him speak. In doing so, I was addressed
several times, with cutting remarks such as, "Go back to where you came
from!!" "You're sapping off of the government, be grateful!" and a mocking,
"Ching Chong, Asians for Trump!!" When I didn't reply to the last comment,
the individual followed up with, "Do you even speak English??" in a very
slow, exaggerated manner of speech. I have never felt such concentrated
hatred in such a charged atmosphere, and it was honestly terrifying, and
extremely unsettling. I know this pales in comparison to the environments
many people face on a daily basis, but I've had the immense privilege to
never be so intimately exposed to this kind of tension. It's incredibly
unfortunate that this election season has become so polarizing, as I have
many friends who attended the rally last night who I respect, admire, and
support in so many other ways. I'm 18 years old. I've lived here in the
United States for 18 years. I'm a U.S. citizen. I cast my ballot this week,
don't forget to cast yours. |
