Outgoing California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer announced plans on Tuesday
to introduce legislation which would eliminate the Electoral College and
award the presidency based upon the popular vote.
“The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not
reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately. Every
American should be guaranteed that their vote counts,” complained Boxer,
who is resigning in January and will be replaced by California Attorney
General Kamala Harris.
Democrats are incensed that Republican Donald Trump won the presidency over
Hillary Clinton despite receiving fewer votes last Tuesday.
According to Boxer, Clinton currently leads Trump by 990,758 votes. But
Trump won 306 electoral votes compared to Clinton’s 232 because of his
victories in states like Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Supporters of the Electoral College have pointed out that a change to a
popular vote system would not necessarily mean that Clinton would have
defeated Trump. The Republican largely ignored blue states like California
and New York knowing that he stood little chance of winning a majority of
votes there.
Boxer fumed that Trump’s win is the second in recent history in which a
Republican won the presidency while losing the popular vote.
“In my lifetime, I have seen two elections where the winner of the general
election did not win the popular vote,” she lamented. George W. Bush
defeated Al Gore in 2000 after receiving fewer popular votes.
“This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still
lose the presidency,” Boxer said.
Boxer’s bill, which has little chance of passing a Republican-controlled
Congress, would amend the Constitution to abolish the Electoral College.
“The amendment would take effect when ratified by three-fourths of the
states within seven years after its passage in the U.S. Congress,” reads
Boxer’s press release.
The liberal media has also blasted the Electoral College and called for its
end. Slate, a left-leaning online news magazine, called the institution an
“instrument of white supremacy — and sexism.”
