According to election results, about 53% of white women voted for Donald
Trump and yet, there is a lack of focus on dismantling structural and
institutional racism and white supremacy for marginalized communities of
color.
The Women's March on Washington started out rough due to co-opting the name
"Million Woman March" from 1997, poor organizing and posts voicing concerns
being deleted from the national page by countless black women and their
allies who have been raising these issues since early November: http://bit.ly/2g0ydgH
While the original three organizers eventually turned over the march to WOC,
it has to be recognized that it started out of the ignorance of feminism
that centers white women by default and ignored women/femmes of color, only
to then be saved by the very women/femmes of color that they were ignoring.
White feminism demonstrates an ALL WOMEN'S LIVES MATTER approach, but the
outrage is low when the issues are specific to black women and other
communities of color. If the election results was a surprise, it's because
people who don't deal with racism were not listening.
Whether you are attending the march or not, we are CALLING on white
feminists to take a stand up and fight racism in 2017.
What can you do? A lot, but here a few ideas....
1. Check your privilege. Use it as a tool to challenge systems that you
benefit from.
2. Reach out to local black and brown led grassroots organizations in your
community. They need your support! Donate, volunteer!
3. Speak up and educate other white people about ending racism. People of
color should not be expected to do this.
4. Spread the word! Share this FB event with everyone you know to help raise
awareness about these issues.
Intentional or not, white feminists often use ideas, theories and
perspectives from women of color to amplify their own voices and experiences
while the social, political and economic conditions of marginalized
community remain the same. This is not okay.
