My name is Ali, and I am an Iranian-American. I have been a student here, I
got my Ph.D. here. I have been an engineer, a scientist and most recently a
product manager.
I have been working at (and hopefully contributing to) companies like
Microsoft, Yahoo, and Linkedin. I have a daughter born in this country. I
felt at home in this country.
Today, for the first time, I felt this is not home anymore. I felt scared, I
felt confused, I felt lonely. My friends and family are scared and helpless.
I read stories of my friends and their friends, and what is happening is
very sad, and scary. People (U.S. legal residents!) are getting detained or
deported, just because of their religion/nationality*, and this is against
all the principles that I have learned living in this country.
In the last 12 years, I saw nothing but kindness, and class from people of
this country. I am asking my non-Iranian friends to stand with us. We need
to know that you still want us in this country. I refuse to believe that
Americans are in favor of this law, and I refuse to believe they want my
friends and family out of this country.
You can help in many ways. Some that I can think of:
You can educate people, and let them know what is happening,
You can call your representative and voice your concern**,
or next time you see one of us, you can hug that person and say that we
stand together against discrimination and hatred.
And one last note. I promise you one thing: Whatever he does, he will not
make me hate any of my fellow Americans. Also, what he did made me realize
how much more I should care about people of minority, and people from
different countries and religions. I promise you that I will never hate
someone based on their religion or country of birth. You are making us
closer and you do not know that yet.
*There have been zero fatal terror attacks on U.S. soil since 1975 by
immigrants from the seven countries mentioned in the Executive Order.

The man accused of killing five people inside a Washington state shopping
mall has been named as Arcan Cetin. A gunman opened fire inside about 7 p.m.
September 23 at a Macy’s store at the Cascade Mall in Burlington,
Washington, police say.
Cetin, 20, is a native of Turkey but is now a legal resident of the United
States.
