In Apr 2013, Jianhua Xie’s liver was severely injured because of acute
starvation in Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH). It was caused by their
poor nutrition management in the emergency department (ED) and, subsequently
, in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The second time Jianhua had
critical hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, the PICU manipulated his blood
acylcarnitine profile lab to cover his fatty acid oxidation disorder (FAOD)
because it would prove that the catastrophic injuries were from their
negligence. They did not ask for his newborn screening (NBS) analyte values
from the state, which would point to the diagnosis to save Jianhua. Instead,
the PICU continued to give him the wrong formula, Nutramigen, while waiting
for him to die. Jianhua survived only after his parents’ intervention.
Then, the PICU transferred his care to the gastrointestinal (GI) team. The
GI doctor and the pathologist significantly underestimated his steatosis (
fatty change) to cover the nature of the metabolic injury. They purposely
ignored acute injury features and then claimed the injuries were chronic.
Immediately after his liver biopsy surgery, the biochemical genetics lab
cancelled his urine organic acid test - another test that can be used for
FAOD diagnosis – that had already been in for 6 days.

However, Jianhua is still using his own liver years after he was set free
from the SCH transplantation program in Dec 2014 by the Washington State
Children Protective Service (CPS). SCH used the CPS to threaten the family
with deprivation of parental rights if they sought opinions out of state.
The split between Jianhua and SCH happened after his visit to the Children’
s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) of UPMC in Aug 2014. Benjamin L. Shneider, MD
, then the director of pediatric hepatology of CHP, told Jianhua's parents
that Jianhua’s permanent injuries in 2013 were significantly less than the
SCH had claimed. Jianhua’s parents suddenly realized that SCH had been
deliberately hiding the life-saving diagnosis and sabotaging Jianhua’s
health to make the transplant happen, and so, they would evade a malpractice
lawsuit. Months later, Dr. Shneider took another job at the Texas Children

Balistreri, MD (medical director emeritus of liver transplantation), Amy T
Sheil, MD, and Kevin E. Bove, MD (the most experienced CCHMC pathologist),
stated that the injuries were apparently metabolic after reviewing slides of
the biopsy done in SCH. They said that Jianhua’s liver survived an acute
insult, but it had the potential to partially recover. The ultrasound lab
ordered by Jorge A. Bezerra, MD showed multiple subcentimeter echogenic foci
throughout his liver, and that his pancreas was diffusely echogenic. A
couple weeks later, after her signoff of the pathology report, Dr. Sheil
left CCHMC before she had a chance to review Jianhua’s NBS analyte values.
Ten months later, Dr. Balistreri agreed to take care of Jianhua’s liver
only. He stated that both Jianhua and his brother have the same metabolic
disease based on their elevated CPK (creatine kinase). However, Dr.
Balistreri declined to make any referrals or to discuss Jianhua’s metabolic
condition, because even Dr. Balistreri cannot overcome the nationwide
clinical lab frauds (with evidence provided).
