What is the Difference Between Exemptions, Deductions, and Credits?
In short, the difference between deductions, exemptions, and credits is that
deductions and exemptions both reduce your taxable income, while credits
reduce your tax.
What are the important changes for married parents with kids besides changes
in tax bracket?
1. Nearly doubles the standard deduction: The bill raises it for married
couples filing jointly to $24,000 from $12,700.
Impact for family: less taxable income if you currently use standard
deduction
2. Eliminates personal exemptions: Today you're allowed to claim a $4,050
personal exemption for yourself, your spouse and each of your dependents.
The House bill eliminates that option
Impact for family: more taxable income
3. Expands child tax credit: The bill would increase the child tax credit to
$1,600, up from $1,000, for any child under 17. The bill would let more
people claim the child tax credit. The income level where the credit starts
to be phased out would increase to $230,000 for married parents, up from $
110,000
Impact for family: less tax and it will partially offset the negative impact
of #3
4. Creates two new family credits: The bill would create two different $300
tax credits, one for non child dependents and one for each spouse
Impact for family: at least $600 less tax
5. Eliminates tax exclusion for dependent care assistance accounts (FSA):
The max contribution is $5000 today. However, child/dependent care expense
credit appears to remain untouched
Impact for family: Increase in taxable income while reduction in tax. Net
net a family could see a slight increase in actual tax payment
Overall, if you are married parents with two or more children and are
currently using standard deduction, you should see a reduction in your tax
bill. | C****t 发帖数: 3813 | 2 You are either with trump or Hillary
