It really infuriates me, and shows me how young most redditors are when
discussing George Bush. I don't give a shit if he was manipulated by his
group of cronies. When you are elected to be the leader of the free world,
you don't get to use ignorance or ineptitude as an excuse. Especially
when it
comes to the invasion of a country.
＊＊He is directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of American
soldiers, and over a million Iraqi civilians*.
＊＊He gave America the Patriot Act, which effectively legalized unlimited
domestic spying.
＊＊He authorized the use of fucking torture on people detained with no
charge. ＊＊Guantanamo, CIA black sites, extraordinary rendition, NSA spying
on literally everyone in the U.S..
I honestly feel uncomfortable posting this comment, and that is a direct
result of his policies. People get so caught up in this "Drumpf is
literally Hitler" mindset that they lose all ability to think rationally.
Obama fell in line lock step with the Washington establishment since
pretty much his day one in office. He exponetialy expanded the drone strike
program and illegal domestic spying, but people are so caught up with
identity politics that they say crazy shit like "he was our greatest
president" because he was young, black, and cool. They see the video of
George Bush throwing a baseball pitch, or the picture of him with the dubya
shirt guy and go, "Awww, maybe he wasn't so bad, I would rather have him
than Trump". What about when people were, rightfully so, calling
him a war criminal? What about the largest protest in human history against
the Iraq war? How did things get so fucked up that we lost sight of the big
picture, and the important issues, in favor of petty name calling and
squabbling?
Edit: Credible estimates of Iraq War casualties range from 150,000 to 460,
000. Other highly disputed estimates, such as the 2006 Lancet study, and the
2007 Opinion Research Business survey, put the numbers as high as 650,000
and 1.2 million respectively, while body counts, which likely underestimate
mortality put the numbers as low as 110,000.
I chose the (probably inflated) high estimate of deaths, while others are
bombarding me with the (probably underrepresentative) low estimate.
Regardless of the exact number of deaths, the Iraq war is one of the great
human tragedies of our times. The destabilizing effect that it had had on
the region will continue have a destructive ripple effect from the cradle of
civilization to the north of Scandinavia. | r*********t
