A detective says the teenager charged in a fatal attack on a Columbia
University graduate student claims he tried to stop the victim from running
into traffic.
Authorities believe the 14-year-old suspect attacked Ming-Hui Yu to impress
his friends.
The detective told a court yesterday that the teen said he tried to grab Yu,
but Yu pushed him away.
Yu then ran onto Broadway where he was hit and killed by a car.
