appropriate level instruction, with or without ability grouping?
Please cross-post on GTAL and anywhere else useful:
I and some other MCCPTA folks will be meeting with MCPS next week to discuss
parent concerns about ability grouping. Some of the people in the group
have expressed skepticism that the concerns we've been raising for the last
few years about appropriate ability grouping in C2.0 and Middle School
Reform Initiative classes are as widespread as the GCC and Curriculum
Committees believe them to be. I need some survey data to support my belief
that concerns are widespread, and for that I need school-specific responses
. We will compile the responses into a document that does not identify any
individual by name, but we do need to know your school. To that end, if you
are willing, please send me an email, ideally cc'ing Amanda and Laurie (
Curriculum chairs) at the addresses above, with the following information.
1. Your school's name.
2. Your student's grade.
3. For elementary school: Does your school use any kind of ability
grouping in grades K-3? This can include both cross-grade regrouping or
homeroom assignments.
3a. If yes, do you feel the grouping is transparent?
3b. If yes, do you feel the grouping is flexible, meaning that
children who experience growth spurts in readiness can easily move to a more
appropriate group?
4. Do you believe your child is getting the appropriate level of
instruction?
5. If not, do you believe your child's teacher(s) is/are using any kind
of differentiated instruction?
6. For Middle School parents: Does your middle school offer more than
one level of curriculum in core subjects by class? In other words, does
every student take Advanced Widget Making 6,7,8 or is there an on-grade
level offering as well?
6a. If yes, does your school use any kind of sectional grouping (
creating sections of Adv. Widget Making grouped around different ability
levels) or are all assignments essentially random or schedule-driven?
6b. If your school uses only one level, do you feel your student gets
appropriate differentiated instruction or do all students do the same work
using the same texts or other materials?
The more people respond, the more powerful this will be, so please consider
taking the time. I'm interested in your answers whether you are happy or
not, by the way -- not just looking for the discontented. If your school is
a DI success story, I want to hear about it and promote its replication.
Again, this will be used anonymously. Therefore: Please DO NOT post to the
lists; I will post the compiled data to everyone afterwards.
