Mongol Dance Drama to Play at Kennedy Center
Wedding of Ordos Unfolds Spectacle of Ancient Wedding Culture
Washington, DC –
From the high, desert plains of Inner Mongolia a lavish and exotic musical
dance drama is blowing into the Kennedy Center on January 24-25, 2014. The
Wedding of Ordos, depicting the poetry, music, and dance of a 700-year old
Mongol wedding tradition of the Ordos Mongols will feature athletic dancing
and sumptuous pageantry in the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater on
January 24 and 25 at 8 p.m.
Tickets, starting at $20, are available by calling (202) 355-8700, or Online
at WWW.WPAP.US, or Ticket Hotline at (888) 399-6886.
The long history of the wedding customs, etiquette, apparel, and celebration
is re-enacted in a musical drama divided into eight parts. From the first
encounters between a young man and woman, to their growing attraction and
presentation to each other's families, to the solemn wedding ceremony, and
their subsequent life on the great prairie of Ordos, the Wedding of Ordos is
a moving portrayal of traditional Mongolian culture.
The magnificent Ordos wedding ceremony has been passed down from generation
to generation for more than 700 years. Originating in ancient Mongolia
during the Yuan (or Mongol) Dynasty, the ceremony features Mongolian folk
art, including the melodies of the horse-head fiddle, the distinctive long
song, and various traditional dances. This unique performance – rarely seen
outside of Mongolia itself – faithfully recaptures dancing and art
nurtured by nomadic Mongol families since the glory days of Kublai Khan.
Ordos Song and Dance Theater, based in the provincial capital of Ordos (
which translates from Mongolian as “many palaces”) was founded in 1951.
For more than 60 years, the company has promoted the culture of Ordos
Mongols through its productions and performances. Its large-scale programs
have received numerous awards, including the Wenhua Award, recognizing
excellence in dance, for Wedding of Ordos in 2010. The creative team
includes Qi Bilige (playwright), Badema (art director/director/choreographer
), Guo Mingli (executive choreographer), Su Jianjun (executive choreographer
), Liu Gangbao (composer), Wuliji (composer), Zhang Jiwen (stage design), Li
Peng (lighting design), and Guo Jian (costume design). |
