The entity commonly referred to as ‘Taiwan’ consists of the island of
Taiwan, two small offshore islands and several nearby islets. The island of
Taiwan is located about 100 miles off the southeast coast of the People’s
Republic of China. The People’s Republic of China considers the island part
of mainland China. The government in Taipei considers the island an
independent nation.
