Abalone diver is 9th to die off North Coast this year
By NATHAN HALVERSON
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT
Monday, June 18, 2007
A 51-year-old San Francisco man died Sunday morning while abalone diving
near Mendocino - the ninth person to die this year off the North Coast.
The death of the man, whose name was not released, was the sixth
involving
abalone hunting along the Mendocino County coast this season.
At about 9:30 a.m., the man's wife noticed her husband's motionless body
in
the waters near Jack Peters Creek and motioned to two other divers for
help,
the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office reported.
The divers removed the victim from the water, but responding paramedics
pronounced the man dead.
The cause of the death is under investigation, Sheriff's Sgt. Mike
Dygert
said.
"We've had quite a few more deaths this year," he acknowledged.
The death continues a pattern in which most victims are not from the
North
Coast.
Press Democrat records show two-thirds of the abalone hunters who died
on
the North Coast in the past 10 years were from outside Sonoma and
Mendocino
counties.
The past abalone hunting death was May 21, when Hung Truong Ha, 59, of
San
Jose drowned near the "Point Arena Lighthouse".
Salina Sau Yee Cheung, 60, of Gilroy was rock-picking abalone when she
died
April 18. Her death was attributed to a heart-related medical emergency.
On the same day, Arthur Boyd, 70, of Atascadero drowned near "Caspar"
while
rock-picking abalone. A heart condition also contributed to that
drowning,
officials said.
The next day, Mang Jay Yang, 36, of Suisun drowned while abalone-picking
near the Point Arena Lighthouse.
On April 22, Craig Richards Sangalli, 51, of Oakland died of a heart-
related
problem believed to have been brought on by the cold, rough water. He
had
been diving for abalone.
On April 7, Hak Song Kim, 55, of Fort Bragg drowned apparently after
being
washed off the rocks while fishing near Mendocino, authorities said.
Two coastal deaths have been reported this year in Sonoma County: Victor
Smith, 50, of Petaluma drowned April 29 while scuba diving near
"Stillwater
Cove Regional Park"and Robert Fletcher, 49, of Wheatland died in March
after
falling off a marina dock at Bodega Bay.

S.F. Man Dies Abalone Diving Off Mendocino Coast
(AP) MENDOCINO A San Francisco man pulled from the waters off the
Mendocino
County coast became the sixth abalone hunter to perish in the area this
year
.
The motionless body of Sun Leung Wong, 51, was spotted near "Jack Peters
Creek"by his wife Sunday morning, sheriff's officials said. Sgt. Mike
Dygert
said. Deputies were called to the Mendocino Headlands at Jack Peters
Creek
around 9:30 a.m.
Two divers in the area observed Wong's wife in distress at the shoreline
and
saw Wong motionless in the ocean 30 yards offshore. The divers pulled
Wong
from the water and state Department of Fish and Game wardens gave CPR
until
paramedics arrived. Wong was pronounced dead at the scene, Dygert said.
The cause of his death was still being investigated, Dygert said.
Mendocino County usually records three or four abalone-related deaths
during
the entire April-through-November season as hunters brave treacherously
slick rocks and dark, choppy waters to pry the prized mollusks from the
ocean
floor.
The five other victims in 2007 are believed to have drowned or died of
heart
attacks. All had come to the North Coast from other parts of
California.

FT. BRAGG ― Three brothers who were arrested in possession of 68 abalone
after driving from their Sacramento residence and diving for abalone in
Mendocino for several consecutive days last year, received felony
sentences
on conspiracy charges in a Mendocino County court, the Department of
Fish
and Game (DFG) announced.
Bronson Le, 46, Minh Le, 31, and Cong Le, 33, were arrested on Oct. 26,
1999
after local citizens reported them diving for abalone off Kelly Street
in
the city of Mendocino. When arrested on the ninth consecutive day of
diving,
they were in possession of 68 abalone, DFG officials said. All were
convicted of felony conspiracy charges to harvest abalone from a closed
area
for commercial purposes.

How to Use an Abalone Iron
Introduction
Abalone is a rare and expensive shellfish treat for those lucky enough
to
find it. If you're diving for "abs," double-check local regulations and
make
sure you have a fishing license ' hefty fines and bad karma could
follow
otherwise.
Instructions
Difficulty: Challenging
Steps:
1Step OneSlip your hand through the handle strap and grab the grip.
2Step TwoApproach the abalone slowly, trying not to announce your
presence
by stirring up the water around it.
3Step ThreeUse the measurements on your abalone iron to determine if
your
abalone is of legal size ' get a rough eyeball estimate from a distance.
4Step FourWedge the tip of your abalone iron between the abalone's shell
and
the rock.
5Step FiveThrust the abalone iron forward quickly until approximately 3
inches of the iron are underneath the shell.
6Step SixUse the leverage obtained from the iron to pop the abalone off
the
rock ' like peeling a tire away from a rim with a crowbar.
7Step SevenCatch the abalone with your free hand and place it in your
dive
bag.
8Step EightDouble-check the legality of your abalone by holding it up
against the measurements marked on your iron once you surface.
9Step NineReturn the abalone to the area where you found it if it's too
small.
Tips & Warnings
Surprise the abalone with stealth. If it senses a predator, it will
clamp
down on the rock and you'll have no chance of getting your iron
underneath
the shell.
Use caution when popping the abalone off or you'll break the shell. You
don'
t want to break the shell only to find out that your abalone is too
small to
keep.
Go after abalone while they're relaxed and unaware of your presence '
you'll
save your breath and knuckles from undue abuse.
Keep a sharp lookout for eels as you're popping the abalone off the
rock.
Abalone is a favorite eel food, and eels will aggressively chase after
the
abalone in your hand.
