Very good analysis in the above link. I copy some discussion here:
What can be learned from this tragic event?
The primary purpose of these TraditionalMountaineering experience reports (
and the American Alpine Club's fifty eight Annual Report's of Accidents in
North American Mountaineering) is to aid in the prevention of accidents.
The first thing that we note is the lack of accuracy of the first reports
from Kevin Bacher, a spok |

1.They should stay in Camp Muir
2.GPS with waypoint may save him (A lot of GPS now has topo maps)
3.Waterproof jacket and pants may save him
4.Shovel to dig a good snow cave may save him
5.Insulated pad may save him
....
....
The more I think about this, the more I feel this is totally avoidable. |

the first place. It was a miserable day. A storm was forecasted well in
advance. It had been very bad weather for a week. I still don't understand
why they chose that day to hike Camp Muir with so little preparation.
When the storm came, it was 70MPH wind with 3-foot drifting snow.

实际上, 大部分登山事故都是可以避免的,那种完全以外的不可抗因素导致的事故很少
