Where we hike: Old Rag Mountain, Shenandoah National Park
From the meeting point, we will be car pooling and driving to the lower Old
Rag Parking Area where the ranger booth is located, which takes about 1 &#
189; hour. After paying a small entrance fee and getting a trail map at the
booth, we will be heading to the upper parking lot where the trail starts.
If you miss our gathering at the Fair Oak Mall at 9:00 a.m., drive directly
to the lower parking lot at Old Rag Mountain to meet us.

Old Rag Mountain is located near Sperryville, VA and easily accessed by VA-
600. It is one of the most popular and scenic hiking destinations in
Shenandoah National Park and draws thousands of outdoor goers from the
region each year. It provides many spectacular views of Blue Ridge
Mountains and giant scramble rocks, particularly during this foliage peak
season in the fall.
The hiking trail is very exciting and could be challenging to at least some
of us. A roundtrip hike is about 9.6 miles from the lower parking lot area
and will take about 5 ½ hours plus 30 minutes of lunch break, depending
on your physical feasibility. The difficulty ranking of the trail ranges
from moderate to challenging (the first half of the loop is ascending and
the second half is descending). So, be well prepared. We've been there the
year before, when all participants successfully made it without major
difficulties.
What you need: Please make sure to bring a pair of good hiking shoes,
suitable clothing, plenty of water and food. For those of photography
enthusiasts, it is surely one of the best time to take some good shots.
Be on time, please! At this time of the year, the popularity of this hiking
trail is tremendous, and the parking space is very limited and will be
filled quickly. The daylight hours are getting shorter, and we must start
early.
