So there’s still no clear explanation for what just sent the Dow on that
ridiculous slide. But the questions are starting to come faster and faster.
A biggie: What was the role of computerized trading to blame?
On a related point, a few have pointed out some rather strange action in
Procter & Gamble shares. A P&G spokeswoman said the company doesn’t know
what might have caused a sudden drop and said that it is looking into the
matter, according to the Dow Jones reporter covering the company. Any ideas?

Procter&Gamble: Not clear why share price plunged
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Procter & Gamble Co. (NYSE:PG)
briefly plunged 23% Thursday before just as suddenly cutting its losses to 2
% for the session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEX:INDU) component
was last trading at $61. P&G shares were trading above $62 a share for most
of the day until a sharp afternoon sell off sent the Dow down more than 900
points. The Dow was down 363 points with about 18 minutes left in the
trading day. A P&G spokesperson said the household products giant was
looking into the sudden drop in its stock price. Shares hit an intraday low
of $39.37. |

The selling was a result of technical glitches that caused some stocks,
including Dow component Procter & Gamble (PG, Fortune 500), to plunge 37% to
$39.37 per share from the close of $62.12 Wednesday. The consumer products
maker recovered most of that loss by the close, ending just 2% lower.
