OPENING CALL: Stock markets seem set for a positive open Monday, as
investors ride the wave of positive sentiment coming from Asia and Europe.
"Europe is pushing higher as commodities rally and following on from a
positive session in Asia," said James Hughes at CMC Markets. "Investors will
be looking to the FOMC meeting minutes Tuesday for direction, and try to
gauge Fed members feelings about another round of quantitative easing,"
Hughes said. Also, this week, earnings season will begin in earnest, with
Intel reporting Tuesday, followed by JP Morgan Wednesday and Google Thursday
.
EQUITIES: China's Cnooc (CEO) will buy a stake in Chesapeake Energy's (CHK)'
s shale oil and gas acreage in south Texas for $1.08 billion in cash--
marking the first time a Chinese state-run oil company invests in the
booming shale hydrocarbons business in the U.S.
Cnooc and Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake announced late Sunday that Cnooc
will purchase a 33.3% interest in Chesapeake's 600,000 acres in the Eagle
Ford shale, and will also fund 75% of Chesapeake's share of drilling and
completion costs until an additional $1.08 billion has been paid, which
Chesapeake expects to occur by the end of 2012. The transaction is expected
to close in the fourth quarter of 2010. Cnoonc shares were 5% higher in Hong
Kong, while Chesapeake traded up 4.3 in Frankfurt%.
Eastman Kodak's (EK) striking change of tone in its camera advertising marks
a bid to revive its iconic camera business heading into the critical
holiday season, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Kodak's traditional Mom-oriented marketing hasn't fueled steady sales growth
in recent years. Its digital-camera business has suffered amid weak
discretionary spending and stiff competition for consumer-electronics
dollars.
Its new edgy ads, which feature hip-hop endorsers, are a tacit admission
that it needs something different to boost digital-camera sales by reaching
younger, trendier consumers. Kodak was up 2% in Frankfurt.
Immunogen (IMGN) and Switzerland's Novartis (NVS) and Monday said they
signed a collaboration deal to develop novel cancer treatments.
As part of the collaboration, Immunogen will receive an upfront fee worth $
45 million and potential milestone payments of up to around $200 million,
provided certain research targets are met.
Under the arrangement Novartis and Immunogen will work together to develop
so-called antibody drug conjugates to treat cancer.
Meanwhile, AstraZeneca (AZN) and Pozen (POZN) Monday said their arthritis
pain pill Vimovo has received backing for market approval in 23 countries in
the European Union, a move that follows the product's approval in the U.S.
market in April.
Vimovo is a fixed-dose combination of the anti-inflammatory drug naproxen
and an immediate release version of esomeprazole, the active ingredient in
AstraZeneca's acid reflux treatment Nexium. AstraZeneca was up 1%, while
Pozen traded 6% higher in Frankfurt.
BONDS: The bond market is closed for Columbus Day.
Corporate bonds: European corporate and sovereign credit default swap
spreads were grinding tighter again, with Europe at 100/101 bps, nearing the
100 bps level for the first time in two months, according to Markit. The
market is "very thin so far," a broker said, which is to be expected
following Friday's low volumes.
FOREX: Profit-takers knocked the euro off its highs after the single
currency tried to break over $1.40.
The euro's latest rally came after weak U.S. payrolls data Friday and a
failure by ministers attending the International Monetary Fund Conference
over the weekend to come up with any new currency coordination.
However, investors appeared reluctant to push the euro too much higher as
European politicians have started to voice their concerns over the single
currency's recent strength.
The dollar was also attracting some support after the latest survey of
speculative positions on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange showed that
aggregate net dollar positioning had fallen close to a record low, according
to analysts at Credit Agricole. Dollar positions were at the lowest since
November 2007.
This decline in positions could work in the dollar's favor.
"While there are strong fundamental arguments for being short the dollar,
one should bear in mind that as short positions become more crowded the risk
/reward from being short is, all other things equal, likely to decrease--as
position squaring would magnify a potential dollar correction," said Kasper
Kirkegaard, a senior analyst with Danske Bank.
Nevertheless, downward pressures on the dollar are likely to persist.
By 0530 ET, the dollar was up in Europe at Y82.08, while the euro was up at
$1.3951 and the pound had fallen to $1.5948.
COMMODITIES: Crude futures were edging into positive territory, despite a
flat euro versus the dollar. The 'underlying trend' is for further dollar
weakness without progress at the IMF meeting over the weekend on currency
valuations, said Bjarne Schieldrop of SEB Commodity Research. The dollar
softened Friday, sending oil higher, after disappointing U.S. jobs data. Net
speculative length in U.S. oil contracts hit a five month high on week
ending Tuesday last week because investors are flocking to commodities in
general to hedge against dollar depreciation, Schieldrop notes. But Brent
oil should move sideways, if not slightly lower Monday, with the U.S. on
holiday, he added.
Gold and silver shot out of the blocks in Asia, building on Friday's gains
after weak U.S. employment data increased the attractiveness of precious
metals as a currency hedge.
